Free Music Review: "Everything Is Alive" with Josh Scogin And The Chariot
Hit: 5 Stars

"Everything Is Alive, Everything Is Breathing, Nothing Is Dead, Nothing Is Bleeding", is not your typical hardcore album. As it is mentioned in the linear notes of the cd booklet, this record was recorded in a live setting and no computers were used to "treat" the music or paste parts together. Every song was recorded in one take. If you were ever a fan of Josh Scogin, then this album will be an absolute treat for you. The Chariot is a chaotic mass of hardcore, which will hit you heavier than almost any other album you've ever listened to. The fact that the recording is rough, and was done in one take only adds to its charm, because this record is genuine. The band believes in this cd, and when you listen to the 27 mayhem filled minutes of The Chariot's debut, you get that feeling. This album is worth hearing just for how genuinely brutal and honest it is.

To begin I will say that I initially didn't like this album. I was a huge fan of Josh Scogin and Norma Jean, and when I heard news of his new band debuting, I could not resist the urges to purchase this one. However upon the first listen I was just kinda turned off. The songs weren't bad, but they weren't what I had expected. The production was also rough, and often times the chaos surrounding the music seemed to overwhelm the music itself. The first time through I couldn't really understand the motivation behind this record. Did they intentionally make it sound so monsterous? Upon reading the linear notes of the cd booklet though, I began to take a new outlook on the album. The band makes it perfectly clear that they know this cd may not sound top notch or 100%, but this is how it would be played to you were you in the room with them, and that gradually changed my viewpoint on the record. After a while I just came to love every second of it. The chaotic environment and enormously heavy sound is rivaled only by older Norma Jean, and there's very few bands that can match up to the intensity that The Chariot puts off. If you have never listened to this album before, I think that at first you might be turned off, or not understand what the big deal is about this cd, but trust me give it time. I'm glad I did because I eventually found perhaps one of the best records of 2004, and one of the most innovative to be released in the hardcore or metal world in quite some time.

From the opening seconds of "Before There Was Atlanta, There Was Douglasville", The Chariot takes no prisoners as they immediately pummel you with their own brand of hardcore. Josh Scogin's voice is of course the highlight of the record, and is even stronger than it sounded on "Bless The Martyr, Kiss The Child". He turns out some of the fiercest vocals he's ever recorded on tracks like "And Then Came Then" and "Yellow Dress: Locked Knees". The energy put off by the band is just unparalleled by any other band in the genre. As soon as a song starts, The Chariot does not let up until it's over. The fact that you can hear the guitars ringing with feedback afterwards is a testament to the approach these guys took to recording the record: Put everyone in the room, turn up the instruments as loud as they go, and play everything as hard as you can. Also add in that the band didn't use computers to edit out mistakes, making this record a true tribute to the hardcore days of old when bands had neither the time nor money to record multiple takes for songs. The guitar stylings of Keller Harbin And Tony Medina are a shining portion of the record as they create some of the heaviest breakdowns, and most interesting riffs I've heard in some time on pieces like "Goodnight My Lady And A Forever Fairwell" and "The Company, The Comfort And The Grave". The rhythm section of Jeff Carter and Josh Beiser is flawless, and adds even more crunch to brutal assaults like "Someday In The Event That Mankind Actually...." and "Die Interviewer (I'm Only Speaking German". Josh's lyrics are better than ever, and to truly appreciate the message he is portraying, they must be read by the listener. You wouldn't think a guy screaming his lungs out for an entire record would be having this deep of a meaning behind his songs, but Josh Scogin is one the best song writers to ever grace the hardcore scene. Every second of the 27 minute journey of this record will leave you assaulted and satisfied, and will make you want to listen over and over. The record will grow on you faster than anything ever before, and if you truly understand and appreciate the music for what it is, you're going to be very, very pleased with this cd.

After listening to this album multiple times, it eventually got a hold of me, and now I cannot stop. This is truly one of the most brutal releases you're likely to hear, and aside from the rough production, there is not one thing wrong with this record. Josh Scogin and company truly understand the dynamics of making genuine music, and I commend them for this truly amazing effort. If you were a fan of Norma Jean (when Josh was the vocalist) or are a fan of fiercely chaotic and heavy hardcore, then this record is for you. It will take a few listens to get to know the cd, but once you do, trust me you will fall in love with it. This effort proves that everything is indeed "alive" in Josh's eyes, and I can't wait to see what these guys do next. A definite Must hear.
