Free Music Review: With a little help from their friends!
Hit: 4 Stars

Sting, Mick Jagger, Van Morrison. Just a few of the guests on this Chieftains' CD. Good performances are found throughout the CD, particularly Sinead O'Connor's "Foggy Dew" and Ry Cooder's version of "Coast of Malabar". Some misfires like Jagger's blase take on the title cut and Tom Jones' overwrought "Tennessee Waltz" are easily excused by the quality of the rest of the disc. Some people had a problem with the idea of the Chieftains "selling out" but as long as the quality is there I don't understand the problem with the Chieftains attempting to make a CD that might prove to have more commercial viability. The more people introduced to their music the better.

Free Music Review: Soulful, jubilant and tearful ballads. The best!!
Hit: 5 Stars

This CD makes me wish I was Irish each time I hear it. I have listened to it many, many times; it always brings a fresh smile to my face. I don't know what it is about this Irish music...there is something magical about this CD. The songs are simply beautiful. The melodies are equally suitable for humming to your infant as you soothe her at sunrise or blasting as your driving down a snow-covered country road (and I did both this morning.) This is a CD to give as a gift to any music lover.

Free Music Review: WOW...SIMPLY AMAZING!
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a terrific CD, with its wild meld of celtic, pop, folk, and country strains. The Chieftains, accompanied by such music greats as Sting, Mick Jagger, Sinead O'Connor, The Rolling Stones, Marianne Faithfull, Tom Jones, Van Morrison, among others...who would have thought such an assemblage would result in such a cohesive recording of such wildly divergent music. Of particular note are Sting's mournful rendition of "Mo Ghile Mear" and Sinead O'Connor's stylization of "The Foggy Dew" and "He Moved Through The Fair". Mick Jagger also does justice to "A Long Black Veil". This CD is simply a great recording overall!

Free Music Review: Great Crac, In The Best Of Company
Hit: 5 Stars

Let the purists decry The Chieftains "pandering" to pop stars. This is one of the most satisfying and balanced recordings I've ever heard, and reminds me of great nights in pubs across Ireland, where the most unlikely people get up to sing their "party pieces", where musicians of all stripes find common ground, and where the sum of the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. That's called "great crac", and that's what happens on this album. I am amazed at how Paddy Maloney has matched the songs to the singers; the respect and affection the artists have for their material and for one another is apparent in every cut. The likes of Sting, Maryann Faithfull, Mark Knoppfler, and Ry Cooder do some of their most delightful work ever, and final cut with the Stones is enough to prove that Keith Richards is capable of fun and frolic. The participants are clearly having a great time on this recording, and only the most sour-souled critic would fail to do the same. Don't miss this!

Free Music Review: Not a weak track on it!
Hit: 5 Stars

Every collaboration on this album is pulled off with verve and energy. Perhaps the most impressive thing about this disc is that with so many flamboyant guest stars, it could've deteriorated into a gimmicky experiment; instead, the Chieftains are able to truly collaborate with each artist. And the artists seem to be eager to do so...listen to Sting sing in a Scottish brogue on the first track, for example... Sinead O'Connor's time-stopping rendition of "He Moved Through the Fair" is nearly a capella, with only the softest of pipe trills to support her amazing vocals. It's my favorite track on the disc.
