Free Music Notes for Long Black VeilFree Music Review: A fantastic tour de force by the Chieftains and guest stars. Hit: 5 StarsWith major talents like Mick Jagger, Van Morrison, Sting, and Tom Jones on tap, and the musical virtuosity of the Chieftains, "Long Black Veil" reaches far beyond the limits of Irish music. Sinead O'Connor's rendition of "Foggy Dew" on this CD is perhaps the most beautiful ever recorded, and Jagger's vocal on the title song updates Johnny Cash's version of the same traditional ballad. This is a stellar recording. You will not be disappointed.
Free Music Review: Lots of variety, lots of fun Hit: 5 StarsThis is overall a brilliant collaboration. Strangely enough, some of the most offbeat songs on here are the best...Tom Jones, the Stones, Mick Jagger. But the song on here that never fails to floor me is Sinead O'Connor's "He Moved thru the Fair", accompanied by the barest twiddle of flute and strings.
Free Music Review: Rolling Stones go Irish Folk ... Great stuff Hit: 5 StarsWhen I first got my hands on that CD, I thought it was just another collection of Irish folk-songs. Of course I knew the Chieftains and I liked their music a lot. But I did not expect such a collection of international superstars to join them in a session. I was really amazed to hear Sting sing a song in Irish. And I most definitely liked Sinead O'Conner's interpretation of "The Foggy Dew". Up until now I had heard that particular song only from rather hoarse male voices. But the very best is the last one: "The Rocky Road to Dublin" (with the Rolling Stones). That song has always been one of my favorites and to hear it played in such an enthusiastic way (you can hear that the guys are having fun) was an experience I would not like to miss. The Chieftains like to collaborate with other artists often. These experiments turned out fine before (Irish Folk played by a Chinese symphonic orchestra, imagine that!) and this record takes their tradition of open-minded jam-happiness to new dimensions.
Free Music Review: A terrific compilation of songs and singers Hit: 5 StarsThis album is a grabber. It has my all-time favorite folk song, "Long Black Veil", sung by no other than Mick Jagger, and keeps up the pace with an excellent selection of familiar and not-so-usual songs. The guest artists add an extra charge to the (as always) good performances by the Chieftains. I say buy it!
Free Music Review: Marvelous, soulful variety! Hit: 5 StarsI've owned this CD for some time and enjoyed its wonderful variety. As usual, the Chieftains, Paddy Mahoney et al, do not disappoint. This time they incorporate their versatility with some Top Flight members of the musical community. The results are engaging, fun, uplifting and melancholy in turns, as all good Celtic musical efforts should be. The fiddle, the pipes, and the tin whistle uproariously abound and distinguish themselves proudly in this masterful work.
I heartily recommend it to all Chieftains fans; any good music fan for that matter!
