Free Music Review: Back in time with the Clancys and Tommy Makem

I played my two Cds of the CBTM in Concert on St. Patrick's Day, and nostalgia enveloped me. Back to my young days, when I first heard The Jug of Punch on the radio, and knew then that the way Irish ballads were sung was forever changed; a terrible beauty was born. While my comtemporaries were listening to the Beatles, I was a dyed-in-the-wool CBTM addict. I remember once hearing The Holy Ground sung by the Raidio Eireann Singers, men and women in evening dress singing in a quasi operatic style in the days when, to quote Liam, the airwaves were full of light music and heavy sopranos, making no sense of the song whatsoever, and then I heard the boys and the song became magical, 'fine girl y'are' becoming a catch-phrase around Dublin. Then my delight the first time I saw them on the fledgling Irish television service, with Ronnie Drew and the Dubliners in the audience, getting a master class in, if not musicianship, stage-craft. My first live concert with the boys in the National Stadium, when I walked home with my feet hardly touching the ground. A midnight concert in the Grafton Cinema with Liam solo and Luke Kelly, when the ignoramuses booed the great Seosaimh O'hEanai, Joe Heaney, off the stage. The time 'Isn't It Grand Boys' was banned on Raidio Eireann, because a listener objected to the word 'bloody' being used on air.
Later, when I emigrated to Australia in 1972, and had learned to 'play' the guitar, and shamelessly stole and used all the Clancy material, links and all, in a Melbourne folk club called 'The Polaris'.
In 1973, while I was rehearsing a play with the late great Sir Michael Redgrave for the Comedy Theatre in Melbourne, the Clancys and Lou Killen played in that same theatre, and I went twice, dragging along Aussie friends each time, and afterwards they became firm fans. That was when I learned that each 'ad lib' was carefully rehearsed, with nothing left to chance; a lesson in professionalism.
In the last few years, Liam obliged me by reading poetry on some radio programmes I produced, and my admiration for him, already considerable, doubled.
One sleeve note on the CDs that fascinated me was where Tommy Makem is credited with playing guitar. I've only seen him do that once, and that was with Makem and Clancy on a number called 'Peter Kagan and the Wind'. I'd love to know where he uses the guitar on those live CDs.
Well, I've gone on long enough, but I think you may gather that I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting my youth through those live CDs, and I thank the 'last man standing' from the bottom of my heart.
If you read this Liam, try to listen to the Tom Waits song, 'Day After Tomorrow'; it was made for you to perform.
