Free Music Notes for The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem In Person at Carnegie Hall- The Complete 1963 ConcertFree Music Review: Review of the NEW, expanded edition Hit: 5 Stars
For serious fans of Irish folk music like me, who are incensed at how Sony has spit on its Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem's Columbia catalogue, the release of this hugely expanded version of one of the quartet's greatest live recordings is nothing short of an early Easter miracle.
It seems like everything is here -- all the songs (plus the two from the 1962 Carnegie Hall concert attached to the original 1963 release of this album), all the between-song dialogue, even the guitar/banjo tuning. Wait 'til you hear the fun, innocent references to John F. Kennedy (then the U.S. president and still 9 months from his assassination).
Without the visuals, you're not always sure what's going on with the banter, but it helps to know there were some people actually sitting *behind* the group during the St. Patrick's Day, 1963 concert. That fact isn't readily apparent in the miniscule version of this album released in '63.
Also, you quickly understand what Liam Clancy's referring to in his brilliant liner notes when he refers to audience participation. Again, not evident on the truncated original release, in this version you hear how boistrous the crowd is, shouting out songs it wants to hear to the point where Makem, amidst the competing requests, yells "shut up!" It's quite amusing.
Beyond this, the sound quality is excellent, the performances as energetic and feisty as the truncated original album suggested, and the CD packaging is excellent -- lots of never-before-seen pictures of the boys at the hall and an in-depth essay placing the boys in their time.
Absolutely worth buying!
Free Music Review: Fantastic - with a glitch Hit: 5 Stars
My very first Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem LP was this one - I still have the original vinyl and the CD. I fell in love with their music after one play. The extended, full concert is absolutely great. I only have one problem - on the original LP the final song was "The Parting Glass" which was the perfect song to end this concert. It's still the finale but Columbia Legacy has added two more after it. They were recorded earlier than the Paddy's Day concert but were included on the original album - WHY? They are great songs but why pretend that they were part of the original concert? There was enough material without including these two extraneous songs from an earlier concert. Despite the grousing about these two songs, this CD is highly, highly recommended to all fans of the Clancy/Makem tome and to all fans of Irish music. They were the ones that started it all.
Free Music Review: high energy plus Hit: 5 Stars
Hard to believe it's over forty five years since this first came out. To sound as fresh now, or even more so is no small accomplishment. The two cd set of the entire concert is incredible; high energy from start to finish.Bob Dylan once said Liam Clancy had the best singing voice he ever heard. No small compliment, and evidence is given here to justify that fact.In truth, all four were fine singers, and entertainers, more so than the countless imitators they spurned. The Irish folk revival started with the Clancys & Tommy Makem, and this cd set is a perfect example of why. Very highly recommended for all interested in this genre; great performance and great sound. Now if Sony would only release the rest of the Clancy Bros.& Tommy Makem catalog on cd......
Free Music Review: A Good Album Expanded to a Great CD Hit: 5 Stars
When I first heard "The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem: In Person at Carnegie Hall", it was on vinyl and sounded great. I enjoyed it and discovered later it was only a fragment of the actual performance and a couple songs were not even taken from this historic 1963 concert. This double CD is the full length concert from St. Patrick's Day 1963. Though dated, as far as the commentary, this CD stands out as one of the greatest live folk albums of all-time. The group sounds fantastic and I truly enjoy the added dialogue between songs. Though at hart I still prefer vinyl, one of the benefits of digital recordings and CD's is the ability to squeeze so much more music into one package. You'll enjoy listening to this CD long past St. Patrick's Day.
Free Music Review: It's great to hear "The Lads" again as they were meant to be heard! Hit: 5 Stars
The Clancy Bothers and Tommy Makem added a dimension to their performamces that most other artists avoided or ignored and that was engaging their audience in a virtual dialogue. Making "wise-cracks", swapping punch lines and having plenty of "sing-a-longs. This album captures that marvelous, magical interplay. They were all actors originally and brought this experience along with them in their poetic recitations and quotations from literature and the theatre.
This album will not disappoint a CBTM fan or any lover of true, traditional Irish Folk Music.
