Free Music Notes for London Calling

Free Music Review: Still the greatest after 20+ years
Hit: 5 Stars

It freaks me out that this album is 25+ years old, and that I've been listening to it for at least 20. A guy I worked with in the mid-80's turned me on to it, claiming it was the best album ever. It didn't take long for me to agree, putting it alongside "Sticky Fingers" as my all-time favorite. The ambition, musicianship, variety, sound, energy, lyricism...it's all here. Absorb this masterpiece, and then lament what a sorry state popular music is in today by comparison.

Free Music Review: Yet another review
Hit: 5 Stars

Alright, I'll keep in short.

First, this isn't really a "punk record." The Clash is a punk band, but this isn't their punk album, "The Clash" or maybe even "Give 'Em Enough Rope" is/are their punk album(s). This album belongs to the entire genre of rock, not just punk. It's that good.

Second, this is the greatest album of all time. It takes the punk ethos and translates it into reggae, rockabilly, funk, ska, and well, just draws from a lot of different genres. It is an incredible rock record that remains poignant and influential to this day.

So if anyone was disappointed by it not being a great punk record, bummer, get "The Clash." For now, listen to "London Calling" again with an open mind and I think you'll hear why everyone praises it. And for those that didn't like it for any other reason, well, you should get that looked at by a doctor.

Free Music Review: Difficult for someone who dislikes punk
Hit: 3 Stars

I hate punk. Let's get that clear from the start.

That said, this is not exactly punk, to my ears. There is far and away much more musicality going on here than in punk music I am used to hearing.

I like the record's political leanings, but for someone who is more into 'groove-based' music, a lot of "London Calling" is not really my style.

There are several songs I really enjoy, however, starting with the title track. "Rudie Can't Fail" is a nice slice of mutant-reggae, and my favorite, "Guns of Brixton" has been described perfectly elsewhere as "a dread-sick skank," which also satisfies my reggae jones.

Someone once described The Clash to me as 'punk-meets-reggae.' My thought is that there was too much punk and not enough reggae.

It's certainly worth multiple listens, however.

Free Music Review: Sorry but it is kind of overrated
Hit: 2 Stars

I bought this album because, well, I heard it was one of the hands down best rock albums ever produced. The Clash even had the title "The only band that matters". I dunno. I won't launch into a diatribe of what is or what isn't punk rock, but I just don't find London Calling a very meaty offering, and I like my music to have meat.

There are some good songs, but this album is 19 TRACKS TOO LONG and many of the songs are forgettable, fast forwardable filler. Its nice that the Clash were doing something different other than the straight ahead three chord punk bands, but musicianship wise, they just sound so timid.

I dunno, just my opinion

Free Music Review: Greatest album ever - uncompromisingly genius!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Its this simple- its the greatest album ever. From the songs to the words to guy stevens production to topper headons amazing drumming to the rock ska punk reggae party political. If you dont own it or like it- well i dont know what to say really!! London calling combines punk energy with every great rocknroll lick- note that was ever played. Ps take some time to read the lyric sheet- what a clever truthful cat strummer was. Ofcourse all credit to mick jones too- and for simonons kingston inspired bass. It was truly a pivotal moment in rock history!!! my fav standout tracks- london calling- death or glory- clampdown- the right profile-lost in the supermarket(for the words).
