Free Music Review: Large, sprawling offering from UK's punk godfathers

Originally released in 1982, this album followed the 1979 smash London Calling. A colossal undertaking, the Clash in interviews admitted that maybe they tried to do too much on this release. But for the true fan, and those in search of old punk and political rock's roots, look no further! The original was a 3 lp blockbuster offering of clash-style rock, funk, roots reggae and dub. Everything's thrown into the stew here, with the best being offered up by Strummer and Jones' good friend and reggae great Mikey Dread. The huge impact of the Sandinista revolution in Nicaragua on the Clash's romantic populism and their sincere desire to see real social change effected without either the US or the (then) USSR playing puppetmaster is the overriding theme of the songs. Though it may seem naive today, the Clash's politically-charged rock helped create a song writing genre rarely matched after their demise. Food for thought, or relic of a bygone age? In any case, this is a truly smashing set of recordings from the UK's greatest punk band and one of the best ever.
