Free Music Notes for Sandinista!Free Music Review: the most important album since darkside of the moon Hit: 5 Starswhen i first listened to this album i have to admit that like most, i didn't completely get it. I had just recently heard the first three clash albums (my first real forray into classic punk) and immediately fell in love with them. this album however didn't grab me as quickly. well anyway after a few years of obsession with their early work i decided to give it one more try. this time i came prepared with 3-4 years of experience listening to the best in punk, blues, jazz, reggea, rockabilly and classic rock -- and more importantly a greater awareness of the socio-political world. sandinista is one of the deepest and most engrossing concept albums ive ever had the pleasure of encountering, it paints a painfully accurate portrait of the continuing struggle between the upper and lower classes and the blood and tears it creates - mainly for the latter, and of course throughout the album Mr. Strummer reminds us of the healing power that music and music alone has to bring us all together.
believe me its all in there -- a true masterpeice if ive ever heard one -- please give this album as much patience and openmindedness as you can, it will repay you a thousand fold. *****
Free Music Review: Follow up to a classic Hit: 4 StarsIf you are looking for London Calling again, this CD is not it. The Clash branched out into other musical forms for this 3 record set. I was 14 at the time this came out and living in London's west end, and the music fit perfectly at that time. Some songs now are a bit aged, and some are just not that good, but as a whole, I think this record set showcases a band taking a different direction and it is one I will keep in my collection.
Free Music Review: MESSY BATTLE Hit: 5 StarsThis album is really so overated and i really can't see the reason why.Probably because it was released a year after London Calling (1979) which is one of the greatest albums of all time.So presumably the critics were expecting something that would match London Calling.True this is a mess throughout, but a "beautiful mess".One of the best albums of the 80's definitely.Invest!
Free Music Review: The Clash's White Album=Underated Hit: 5 StarsThis is the most underated album in rock n roll history. I started listening to the Clash when I was in middle school. When I first bought this album I did not understand it. Sure, I loved the standout tracks such as the Magnificent Seven and the Call up, but as whole I just did not get it. Now being 22 I sometimes go back and listen to this album as a whole on and off and is by far the Clash's most creative album. Do not get me wrong. London Calling is the Clash's opus and one of the greatist albums or rock n roll but if you ask any hardcore Clash fan like myself they may say that Sandinista! is their best album. Much like the Beatles White Album this is just all over the place and listening to it in the year 2006 it stands up to anything done today. The Clash were taking a risk by experimenting with different sound and that is what makes rock n roll exciting. If London Calling made them musicians. This album made them experimental mad men
Free Music Review: No! to Thatcher and Reagan Hit: 4 StarsOK, I'm a geezer. I started work in 1981. And many songs on this album are not great. Still, in 1981 the Clash was "the only band that matters," and they matter today as well.
Magnificent 7: an anthem and intro to life: RING RING 7 AM!!
Ivan vs. GI Joe: all about the 80's not-so-cold war.
The Call-Up: Draft resistance mattered then, and still matters with "stop loss".
Sandinista: "without the Washington bullets he fled". 'nuff sed to numerous clients: Batista, Somoza, Shah, Marcos, Chalabi, insert your favorite next lackey.
Charlie Don't Surf: "Apocalypse Now" vs reality in 1980, who knew where the next "adventure" would be? Today: "Persians don't extreme ski." This is a joke, but think about it.
Lose This Skin:
"Do not turn or hate to see
What happened to the wife of Lot"
How many great rock songs have a valid, rhyming Biblical allusion?
I saw the Who and the Clash at the Seattle Kingdome in 1982. I found the Clash to be the dominant force. And I'm old enough to be a serious fan of the Who.
