Free Music Review: Great if you saw the performance.
Hit: 4 Stars

after seeing the stage production of The Color Purple on it's opening night in SF, I just had to hear some of these songs again. I started out searching (and more searching) to find a CD of the SF cast, since I loved it so. No luck, even though that night at the theatre they were selling disks and saying "buy the music from TONIGHTS performers". Oh well silly me for not getting it then.
Anyway, With a few exceptions of some weird, out of place songs, I loved this sound track. The singer playing Miss Celi was excellent but I do think the lady playing her in SF was a bit better. (sorry, not good with the names). Now one person who was much better than the SF production was the singer playing Sug Avery. I think Michelle Williams really looked the part, but her voice was quite thin. The lady playing her in the NY production, was golden.
Songs I could do without? That whole Get Ready for the Big Dog thing was weird and the Lion King song when Nettie sang of Africa was out of place.
All in all, very enjoyable if you liked the show. My CD is going to wear out soon!

Free Music Review: Transports Me Back to Broadway
Hit: 5 Stars

I saw this musical at the Broadway Theatre in October 2007. Listening to the CD allows me to re-live the joy of that experience because I'm able to visualize the stage action for each of the songs. I don't know if I would have enjoyed this CD as much if I had not seen the play because some of the emotional impact of songs like "What About Love?" and "I'm Here" or light-heartedness/playfulness of songs like "Miss Celie's Pants" and "Any Little Thing" don't come through on the CD.
