The most amazing thing about The Color Purple soundtrack is how its music truly complemented the musical stories of the characters. One example is the subtle, definitive, and somewhat comical "Sofia's Walk." As contrast, there is also the very poignant piece for the main character Celie's 'coming into her own' titled "I'm Here" (this piece actually can bring me to tears [not an easy feat for me]). The most genius, though--and my absolute favorite--is "Champayne Train." Now, this piece embodies the total transition of the character (and film, in my opinion) through Celie's fantasy: a scene of her standing on a train in motion, sipping champagne and tossing little chocolate candies out to the spirit of her sister Nettie. Emotions of reunion of hearts, elation, light at the end of the tunnel, faith and overcomming are truly generated here. I invite you to listen closely as the instruments in this piece is capturing the sounds of a train when in motion is rocking and swaying across the tracks. Wow! How did they do that!? All I can say is: High Kudos to Quincy Jones and Company for this accomplishment. I give this review four (4) stars, because this is a 2 CD set and I do not feel equal passion for every piece, but other than that, this set is worth it. I had this production on LP and it has been on my CD wish list for a number of years (too many). This was a much needed buy for my movie soundtrack collection. |
