Free Music Review: Not Quite the Home I've Been Waiting for, but Very Close!
Hit: 4 Stars

After the disappointment of last year's Borrowed Heaven and the obvious pressure the band was under from Atlantic to score big in the States with urban synth rhythms and country flavors, it's wonderful to hear the band do something they are not only very familiar with, but to put a nice poppy sheen on. In fact, I have waited for the Corrs to do an album like this for 6 years, and the wait has paid off handsomely if not exactly as I'd hoped. Being a huge fan of Irish music and culture, I felt this album was just a bit too poppy, thus the reason for 4 stars instead of 5.

Some of this tribute to their late mother Jean works and some of it doesn't. For instance, their contemporary arrangement doesn't do anything for the old world poetry of "Black is the Color." Imagine contemporary keyboards and strings against these lyrics:
I go to the Clyde and I mourn and weep
For satisfied I never sleep
I write him letters, just a few short lines
And I suffer death 10,000 times

Then again, the same sort of arrangement works for beautiful "Moorlough Shore." Why, I don't know, because the lyrics are just as old world and romantic, if not even more!

If you're a fan of Clannad's, as I am, forget the Corrs' interpretation of "Bauchaille on Eirne," because you will find the rendition too fast paced and Andrea's gaelic enunciation far from the graceful treatment of Maire Brennan's. I will say, however, that I love Andrea's clear enunciation, because I'm studying gaelic, and it's very hard to grasp!

Enough of the comparisons, as I'm here to accentuate the POSITIVE! Without apology the two instrumentals, "Old Hag" and "Haste to the Wedding" are simply more of the delightful instrumentals we have already loved the Corrs for since 1995! Gorgeous studio version of Thin Lizzy's "Old Town" cannot be missed as it's bouncier and more beautiful than the version you may be used to from the Unplugged cd.

"Spancill Hill" is definitely among my top three favorites here because it's contemporary, yet maintains a traditional sound--especially near the end with Andrea's tin whistle, Sharon's violin, and Caroline's bodhran. "Brid Og Ni Mhaille" is so beautiful, a song about a man's longing for his woman who's married another. Not an unusual topic for traditional Irish songs, but one of the most stunning. Absolutely the best? Look no further than Anna McGarrigle's "Heart Like a Wheel." Where Linda Ronstadt poured too much vocal emotion into her phrasing 30 years ago, Andrea does it sensitive and gentle service. The lyrics are already so painfully and emotionally charged, that a tortured vocal isn't the key to this track. It's Andrea's sweet, soft delivery on top of that beautiful piano accompaniment.

In summation, don't judge this album based on their last one, because you'll be missing lots of good music this time. It's still a little more contemporary than you may like, but if you love the original version of Talk on Corners and the spirit of their debut album, Forgiven Not Forgotten, I think you will appreciate Home.
