Free Music Review: An Excellent Compilation Of The Cranberries

It has been a decade since Limerick's finest kids came into our stereos, our CD players, and our lives with their mystic, yet mellow 1992 debut of 'Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?.' Since then, it's been quite an emotional ride for The Cranberries. Throughout their, so far, ten years of surreal highs (Their epic LPs of the Stephen Street-produced 'Everybody Else...' and 'No Need To Argue,' their graceful comeback with 1999's 'Bury The Hatchet,'etc. etc.) and terrible lows (1996's bleak and uninspiring 'To The Faithful Departed' album and the emotionally-draining tour that followed that), Dolores O' Riordan, Noel and Mike Hogan, and Fergal Lawler have crafted out incredibly jangly-rocking, yet thought-provoking melodies from unfortunate love ('Linger' and 'I Can't Be With You'), to the Troubles in Northern Ireland ('Zombie'), to, even, September 11th ('New New York'), and self-discovery ('Ode To My Family' and 'Just My Imagination'). Their unique and beautiful blend of shimmering guitars, passionate bass and drum playing, and lush, (and quite [lovely]) Celtic-like vocals courtesy of O' Riordan, herself, The Cranberries provided an euphoric sound which would become a permanent etching in the soundtrack for our modern-day lives.Thus, what fine way to represent the band and their music than with their 20-song compilation. With anthemic songs that present hope, endurance, seriousness, with an infinite yearning , 'Stars: The Best Of 1992-2002' is a very-class representation of timeless, brilliant songs.
From their first album, which was a stunning and fresh start after recovering from the nauseous, hangover-like affects from bloated hair-metal bands, to their two new and best songs, the intense and uplifting 'New New York' and the rocking, dazzling beauty of 'Stars' (which I, thankfully, first heard it when I seen the band in concert in Chastain Park Amphitheatre in Atlanta, earlier this year. GREAT GIG!), The Cranberries' sound was, and STILL is, simplified, effective, and majestic, indeed.
And sure, sure, their popularity may have decreased and their videos aren't being played on MTV (Anyway, does MTV STILL play videos!?:-) But nevertheless, The Cranberries may not be the most popular band in the world, but they are one the BEST bands in the world...and the reasons for that are in this magnificent compilation. An essential purchase for the big Cranberries' fan or the casual listener.
