Free Music Review: brutal and melodic death metal

If you thought At the Gates was the greatest thing to happen to death metal since "Left Hand Path" (as I did), and you thought The Haunted were pretty good at sucking (as I did), don't give up on the heavier side of the Gothenberg sound just yet. There is still The Crown. "Hell is Here" takes up the torch where "Slaughter of the Soul" left off, bringing extreme brutal thrash heavy melodic death metal for your musical enjoyment. The bottom end is amazingly heavy, the melodies add dimension without turning into neo-classical filler. The solos are searing and Johan Lindstrand is the best death metal vocalist since Tomas Lindberg. This is truly an amazing disc for all the reasons people praise it in addition to one that seems to be overlooked: the songs stand alone. Each song is well crafted and carries its own weight; they have their own identity and are discernable from one another. For this reason "Hell is Here" is my favorite album from these guys, though certainly "Deathrace King" and "Crowned in Terror" are both strong albums. The major criticism this disc gets is the production, which is not perfect but in no way impairs the listeners enjoyment. In fact, I actually prefer the production on this disc to the crystal clear production of lesser death metal LP's. It allows the instruments to breath together instead of cutting them all off from one another in the sake of optimum digital clarity. An exhilirating album. If you like melodic Swedish death metal with a dash of thrash and more heaviness than pretentious guitar wizardry, this is the band (and the album) for you.
