Free Music Review: The Grunge Cult album

The Cult's 1994 self-titled album is easily my least favorite Cult album. Prancing goth rocker Ian on Dreamtime and Love made perfect sense. I had to scratch my head a bit at wild-eyed Southern Ian on Electric, but it was still a fun album. I LOVED arena rocking Ian from Sonic Temple, and am one of the few people who loved the Native American fixated Ian from Ceremony. But I just can't get on board with flannel and angst Ian on this wannabe grunge release.
I may not love this album, but it does have a few really good songs. Coming Down (Drug Tongue) and Star are the most memorable, and Joy is pretty catchy. The rest of the album just sounds like a half-hearted attempt to sound like a Pearl Jam record. I wasn't expecting another Sonic Temple, but the band backed a bit too far away from the hooks and melodies that made that such an effective album and drew me into the Cult in the first place.
This was the first time I was ever really disappointed in a Cult release. It would also be the last album the band recorded for the better part of a decade. If you're a die-hard Cult fan, you're going to want to add this album to your collection. If you liked the band's earlier work and are curious about this album, you're better off downloading (legally of course) Star and Drug Tongue and skipping the rest of this uncharacteristically weak release.
NOTE: In order to complete my Cult remaster collection, I bought the 2000 reissue of this album. Contrary to the product listing, this does not have any expanded liner notes, and the remastering - if indeed it was remastered - is negligible. The only difference I could find between this reissue and the original 1994 disc is that this has the Beggar's Banquet logo.
