Free Music Notes for 4:13 DreamFree Music Review: So far, so good Hit: 4 Stars
I've only listened through a few times, but so far, so good. I wasn't a huge fan of the previous album and Bloodflowers, while have some great music, had really annoying lyrics. Every song has the same theme. It's boring and a chore to listen to, which is a shame considering that it's great musically. This album, IMO, is better than both of those. There are more vintage Cure moments. Things started off well for me with "Underneath the stars", but them got pretty dicey with "The Only One". Yuck. That songs is just plain goofy. It sounds to me like they are trying way to hard recreate the hit they had with "Friday I'm in Love" and that song is just borderline good. At the time Wish came out it felt like a response to all the critics who predictably called the Cure depressing (which I never understood and still don't). Anyway, thankfully, it gets better after that filler is over and the rest of the album is pretty solid. If you like the Cure, give it a shot. My only other gripe is the cover art. Reminds me way too much of the previous album, which also had pretty forgettable artwork.
Free Music Review: Needs to be soaked in. Hit: 4 Stars
While not immediate as Disintegration or Wish there are lot's of great songs that sound familiar but not overly familiar .
The only songs that i don't care for are the opener "Underneath the Stars" which just never completely gells with too many chords and effects drowning out the sound where it's just waves of guitar effects and studio effects with no hooks or strong bassline to anchor the song.
I also don't care for The Scream which is too over the top angsty.
I feel like this album could have been better if they had a more sympathetic producer to there style of music while Keith Uddin has won lots of awards it's mostly for commercial pop music and some of the songs are over modulated which is an unfortunate trend.
The great thing about Disintegration was how grand it was but how much room there was inside the production to hear all the instruments and notes and effects whereas a song like Underneath the Stars sounds muddy and washed out to me.
Either way i think most hardcore Cure fans will like this.
Free Music Review: WAY WAY better than their last effort... Hit: 4 Stars
While I agree that his album leaves something to be desired, it is a GIANT leap in a better direction. I was excited and energetic when I heard that they were releasing a new album, and while I was a little disgusted by their first single, it has actually grown on me. Upon the first listen, I noticed that there is an awkward moment in every song. I don't know why exactly but for some reason the songs begin really smoothly, the rhythm is catchy or woefully beautiful, yet as it builds a certain something is lost by a note (or set of notes) that don't seem to belong...
Lyrically 4:13 Dream is far more superior to its predecessor.
Even though it's not my favorite cure album, in my mind it is their best effort since Wild Mood Swings as far as lyrics and style and even passion are concerned.
Best Tracks: Underneath the Stars (DUH!), Siren Song, The Perfect Boy, The Scream, The Reasons Why.
The Worst Songs: Sleep When I'm Dead, Switch
The rest are pretty good but may take some time getting use to. I like them though! ^_^'
Free Music Review: Smith and co. find renewed focus and vitality. Hit: 4 Stars
The Cure's last album, 2004's self-titled, was driven by a dark, compelling mystique and an artful bleakness that romanticized hopelessness and nihilism. Yes, it was undoubtedly a work of art, but let's face it: it sounded like a 50 minute-long jam session. The band's follow-up, 4:13 Dream is the perfect counterpart to their untitled album: it's brighter, more focused, and emphasizes melody above all other elements. Everything that ever made the Cure great is present on 4:13 Dream. The band's infectious and inimitable goth-pop is more prevalent than it's been in years, and once songs like "Only One" and "Perfect Boy" get in your head, they're going to stay there. Even the album's gloomier offerings, "Underneath the Stars" and "Hungry Ghost" flaunt sweeping melodies capable of elevating listeners to new heights of euphoria. While not every song on 4:13 Dream is a pop-rock masterpiece, as a whole, the album stands as one of the Cure's best. It's been awhile since Robert and co. have sounded so vital.
Free Music Review: The wait is finally over Hit: 4 Stars
Being a die hard Cure fan I bought the album the day it came out. I was not disappointed. The album is a cross between there really "depressing"/dark work like pornography and there more upbeat (If there is such a thing for Robert)like Friday Im in Love, Just Like Heaven. The album had some "poppy" songs which I enjoyed and some of the darker stuff I did not enjoy. My cure resume: I have seen them 9 times and have been a fan since 1991. When I went to see them on May 12' 2008 in Boston I was very impressed with the new songs they played. Usually new cure songs take several listens to get into. The songs they played off the Album i instantly liked and i got the same feeling when I heard them on the CD. Overall I thought the CD was "Hot" but disappointed how old and round Bob looked in concert. My next goal is to get my three year old son (Noah)into the Cure but it is a hard sell when you are competing with the Monster Boogie by Laurie Berkner. Long live Robert and the Boys.
