Free Music Notes for Join the Dots: B-Sides & Rarities, 1978-2001Free Music Review: The Other Cure ................fascinated? Hit: 5 StarsIn the opening page of the companion guide (included in the boxset), Robert Smith says "I expected great B-Sides from the artists I loved..." I share this opinion too as great B-Sides open the fan up to different sides of the artist or group. This is indeed a treasure chest of beautiful and lost gems. Why Do I Rate this Collection Five Stars?: Music: The Cure are known for their dreamlike sounds and rock undercurrents. So here the B-Sides show more depth in this vein. Many of these tracks are unbelievable omissions from Cure albums such as "I'm Cold", "Stop Dead", "Sugar Girl", "Babble", "This Twilight Garden" (my personal fave), as well as Robert's prediction of the new direction the Cure may take on the next new album based around the song "Signal to Noise"...hope that prediction comes true! All the rare and forgotton songs show you new found colours and sounds of this great band. Design: The box is beautiufl with an amazing book where Robert comments on all the songs, lots of great pics and the original artwork for the single sleeves as well as a complete Discography! A lot of time went into this glossy and arty design project to please the fans! In Conclusion, introduce yourself to "The Other Cure"....the songs you never heard much of, the great B-Sides of a group you love!
Free Music Review: as if the cure needed an endorsement.... Hit: 5 Starsi bought this after trying in vain for several years to replace a copy of 'breathe' and 'a chain of flowers'. even if, like me, you already own most of these songs, it is nice to have all of them in one collection.the cure is one of the most musically and lyrically versatile bands ever. they have been in my personal top 5 favourite artists for more than a dozen years. anyone who is a fan should have this boxed set - enough said. :D
Free Music Review: This collection is "Just Like Heaven". Hit: 5 StarsI own around 1000 albums, and have never bought a box set before, but the day this came out I gladly threw down the cash. It's 4 cd's, 70 songs, an excellent booklet, and basically just a perfect package for the "Cure" fanatic. It's well worth it for the first 2 discs alone. Half of what's here is just as good as anything off their albums, and the other half is still interesting. The highlights of each disc are "Happy The Man", "2 Late", "Burn", and "World In My Eyes". All just a hair better than the other 66 tracks. If you're thinking about this, don't, "Just Say Yes".
Free Music Review: Completely Awesome Hit: 5 StarsIn a recent interview, Robert Smith stated that he was sick of the mutterings on the internet about how there are songs missing off of this box set. I have to agree with him... 72 tracks of the Cure, and people still find something to complain about. This is an interesting, enjoyable, and fantastic look at a great band that would be otherwise unheard for those of us who were too young to collect singles in the early 80's. Just as all Cure records, I shall treasure this collection of great music (especially Lament, Do the Hansa, Ocean, Adonais, etc). Great Job Mr. Smith.
Free Music Review: A Treasure for Cure Completists Hit: 5 StarsIf you are not a big Cure fan then go away. This is not for you. If you are keep reading. It's great to finally have all of those wonderful B-sides and rarities in 1 place. And it's about time those great songs from the b-side of the 'Staring at the Sea' tape got remastered (wasn't that outtake collection called 'Standing on a Beach'). You'll also get lots of remixes and covers. Having 3 versions of The Doors' cover "Hello I Love You" seems excessive but I'd rather have more than less - wouldn't you? They also have the Bowie cover "Young Americans". Wondering why they didn't include Hendrix' "Foxy Lady" though. Do you realize The Cure has done 3 Hendrix covers (Hey Joe, Foxy Lady and Purple Haze)? The most pleasant surprise was the inclusion of the painfully hard-to-find "To the Sky" from the b-side of the 'Concert' live tape release. The biggest disappointment is the non-inclusion of the excellent "Forever" from that same release. Why o' why can they not release this on CD?! And I'll bet you that it doesn't find it's way onto any of the upcoming studio remasters because it wasn't a b-side from any particular release. Also missing are "Carnage Visors" and "Curiousity". Still the collection is nearly complete and long overdue. The packaging is very nicely done. It looks like a long, thin hardcover book (I didn't just say long, thin and hard did I?) and includes loads of color photos spanning the band's history. Also includes a narrative history that I plan to read soon. OK now, less reading... more buying.
