Free Music Review: Dead Weather Is Stormy, Strikes Hard!
Hit: 5 Stars

First listen had me lovin HOREHOUND's ragged heaviness but I also remember finding the songs a bit "same-y" sounding. It could be said that this album relies a little too much on standard blues chord progressions. But I kept listening and the brilliance of these songs soon became apparent. The rhythms are so infectious and so is Alison Mosshart. I became a raging fan of hers after hearing her so-catchy-it-hurts record MIDNIGHT BOOM with The Kills. The Dead Weather's super-group lineup needs no introduction, especially not guitar wizard Jack White who picks up the sticks for HOREHOUND and leaves the guitar work for Dean Furtita of Queens of the Stone Age. White is quite familiar with drums having played them in previous bands and it shows. Make no mistake, this crew is a crushing rhythm machine, a force to be reckoned with. Mosshart adapts to this rock tornado singing and sounding quite different from most of her previous efforts, rocking hard and proving her versatility. Mr. White mixes a shambling alt-rock style with classic rock radio time keeping. This is a powerhouse album that only gets spacier and trippier towards the end.

Rating: highly recommended

Breakdown:

"60 Feet Tall" - This standard blues progression is made interesting strictly due to the talent involved. ***1/2

"Hang You From The Heavens" - driving, droning guitars hang over Mosshart who's torn between keeping her lover or spurning him. ****1/2

"I Cut Like A Buffalo" - This one really got my attention. An infectious rhythm with pulsing organ and garbled vocal effects - way cool. *****

"So Far From Your Weapon" - is a semi-slow dirge that bursts with fire when the chorus hits. White really likes blasting away at his cymbals and he smacks and splashes them all over this record. ****

"Treat Me Like Your Mother" - A fierce rocker. Jack lays down a classic alt-rock beat full of excessive snare hits. At one point the song shifts into classic rock overdrive before returning to the original beat. "Time to manipulate!" Sounds like several songs in one. *****

"Rocking Horse" - Jack sings over a contemplative track with a catchy bass and ringing, shimmering guitar textures full of explosive rock passages. ****

"New Pony" - no "Alphabet Pony," this is a bluesy, chugging rocker. ****

"Bone House" - Great quasi-funk beat, loads of tripped-out guitar. The guitar solo sputters like a loose electric cable striking metal. *****

"3 Birds" - This instrumental has that spooky detective feel and it's even funkier than "Bone House." *****

"No Hassle Night" - A bit of a downer but it rocks. The band mines the territory of alt-rock pioneers The Talking Heads on this one. ***1/2

"Will There Be Enough Water?" - A blues-folk number, far mellower than the rest of the album. Jack picks up a guitar for his only showing on the instrument and he uses an acoustic. Dean takes the drum seat to play a minimal, effective beat and adds some ambling piano. Like all these songs, this track is sophisticated in the way it varies in intensity and feel. ****3/4

Completely irrelevent side note: I normally find people who criticize the way other people dress or wear their hair to be annoying weenies. In fact, I enjoy wearing socks with sandles not only because it's comfortable but to tee off whiners who have a problem with it. But I can't help being turned off by bass player Jack Laurences' ugly, greasy long-haired butt cut. Jack, wash your hair and do something with it. Just a suggestion.

Horehound Poster

The Dead Weather is fronted by Alison Mosshart (known to music fans as one half of London-based rock outfit The Kills) and includes The Raconteurs' Jack Lawrence on bass, Queens Of The Stone Age member Dean Fertita on guitar and Jack White on drums and vocals. White produced Horehound, which was recorded in just three weeks at the newly constructed Third Man Studio, also designed from the ground up by Jack White.
