When I first heard Derek Trucks playing slide guitar on his self titled CD I was blown away. It included lots of Blues/Jazz fusion, but that was OK because of his great slide guitar work! Then, on "Out Of The Madness" he and the the band went deep into the Blues with several remakes of classics...Sonny Boy Williamson, Howlin Wolf, and a couple from Son House. All of it sounded great, and the slide work was awesome! So, I was really excited to find that Derek had a new release. Problem is, he and the band are playing World music...not Blues, not Blues/Jazz, but World. "Joyous Noise" has chants, Indian influences, citars instead of guitars. It's not what I thought I was buying based on his first 2 CDs, and certainly not something I'd have expected from the guitarist from The Allman Brothers Band. If I'd have known he had decided to change genres entirely I would not have bought this CD. It sure doesn't belong in my Blues collection! Sorry Derek...let me know when you decide to return to the Blues! |
