Free Music Notes for Soul SerenadeFree Music Review: continued growth by a prodigy Hit: 4 Stars
Derek Trucks continues to blur the lines between jazz, blues, and world music. His slide playing, always among the best around gives several standards a new twist and the bands playing is first rate.
The record starts with a sweet taste of King Curtis' Soul Serenade seguing into Rasta Man Chant. Bock to Bock slides into cool jazz and afro Blue is a trip to the heart of Coltrane country. the two are sandwiched around an outstanding take on Ray Charles' Drown in My Own Tears featuring Gregg Allman doing some of his best singing in years.
As the disc moves toward conclusion it takes some interesting turns. The band plays (pun intended) tribute to Elvin Jones in the original Elvin. A sweet turn on Wayne Shorter's Oriental Folk Song leads to the acoustic Sierra Leone which takes the band out with the same mood altering dubro turn that Duane Allman lent to Eat A Peach with Little Martha.
Definately a record for those who love good playing on good songs.
Free Music Review: Eclectic Synthesis? Hit: 4 Stars
I read most of the reviews and the words 'jam band' crop up way too often. And to try to pigeon hole this stuff as jazz/fusion/southern rock doesn't do it justice. "Derek should use his fingers to play". Believe me, he uses his fingers! He's obviously 'cut the umbilical' to Warren and the ABB. He stays with them because he loves it. I believe he can play/sit in with anybody. To say it's 'courageous' is not quite accurate either, since the ABB has fooled around with Soul Serenade quite a bit; not to mention some jazz licks, etc. Words that come to mind when I listen to this album: range, eclectic, inventive, stretching, synthesis, experimental. I listen to it and imagine this may be very similar to what Duane would have done. My only concern is that Derek throws in licks from Mountain Jam a little too often. The ensemble is tight and this CD has a laid back feel. A righteous effort. A definite 'buy' rating.
Free Music Review: Are two great songs enough for an album? Hit: 4 Stars
Derek Trucks is an incredible musician. He brings virtuosity, taste, variety, and great musicians with him every time he releases an album. And I have all of them.Derek Trucks comes in many flavors. Some of these flavors are nice, interesting, educational, etc. The blues flavor is my favorite. So, each album has only a few songs that I really like. Yet, I like those songs so much that I listen to them over and over. And, those songs provide all the value I need to buy the album. In the "Soul Serenade" album, there are two songs that provide that value: Drown In My Own Tears (which has enough value for the whole album) and Soul Serenade. I played this album for some good friends who love the jazz flavor. They loved it so much that I gave it to them. I had to buy myself another copy to replace it.
Free Music Review: Listen To This Hit: 4 Stars
Blender magazine = 1 star. Rolling Stone = 2 stars. Don't always believe what you read. This is another fine album from Derek Trucks and band.It has more of an "easy" jazz feel due to the inclusion of flute on just about all the tracks.Don't let that scare you, this cd still rocks.Starts off with the Duane Allman fave Soul Serenade (wish it was longer)and quickly fades to Bob Marley's Rastaman Chant.Gregg Allman makes an appearance on an excellent Drown In My Own Tears. The rest is all jazzy instrumentals featuring flute and Allman Bros. style guitar.Somehow it all works.Don't believe what you read just believe what you hear.
Free Music Review: Good CD, but don't expect the Allman Brother's Hit: 4 Stars
This is a great CD. Although Derek Trucks plays with the Allman Brother's Band, this is not an Allman Brothers sounding CD with the Exception of "Drowning in my own tears" with Greg Allman. If you like Jazz, International, or Blues you should like this album. There are some tracks that really groove. And there are also some tracks that really dive in to an international sound. Kofi Burbridge on the flute and the organ can make some sounds that leave you stunned. All in all, this is a pretty mellow CD. But one can listen from start to end and not get bored.
