Free Music Notes for The Devil's RejectsFree Music Review: The soundtrack is a diverse mix of classic seventies rock and country Hit: 3 Stars
The disc starts off with the twangy guitars and faded harmonized vocals of the Allman Brothers' "Midnight Rider". The song helps set the tone of the long, scary journey that lies ahead. There's more country twang from Three Dog Night on "Shambala". The vocals are smooth in their performance with just enough falsetto emphasis. There's some great slide guitar as well. "Satan's Got to Get Along Without Me" by Buck Owens and his Buckaroos is pure honky-tonk blues, right down to its devil references and southern drawl.
Elvin Bishop's "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" is more of a 50's doo wop song. The vocals are melodic and even more so when they are doubled up on the choruses. For some reason I think that some poor guy may be getting killed by the movies lead female character while this one plays in the background. You might recall the stacked, fuzzy riffs of The James Gang's "Funk #49" from a current TV commercial. I'm glad that Zombie chose to reintroduce David Essex's "Rock On" after the over-produced Michael Damien version of the early nineties. This stripped down version sounds much better.
Do I need to say anything about Skynyrd's "Freebird"? It's only shouted out at every rock concert. Clearly Banjo & Sullivan are the hillbilly versions of They Might Be Giants with their contribution of "I'm at Home Getting Hammered (While She's Out Getting Nailed)". If you get the dual disc version you'll get a DVD version of the soundtrack, plus a 20 minute `making of' documentary, movie photos, and trailers.
The Bad
The soundtrack combines sound clips from the movie with the music tracks; I think this takes away from the continuity of the disc. The clips give no real insight to the movie and they are probably some of the most vulgar. There's a lot of country music mixed in with the classic rock music.
The Verdict
The soundtrack is a diverse mix of classic seventies rock and country. It's hard to see how all these songs fit together without seeing the movie. As I said before, the audio clips seem to take away from the music and should have been left out. Of course that's what Rob's Zombie's music is known for.
Free Music Review: Good music lame movie Hit: 3 Stars
Unless you want to hear the F word between each song, order the pg/edited version. The movie sucks but the music is good. I only ordered this for the Terry Reid cuts, they aren't available anywhere else.
Free Music Review: Dual Disc Rocks!!!........NOT! Hit: 1 Stars
Forget dualdisc and screw the inventors of it. After watching this movie, my respect for Zombie as a filmmaker shot upward just because of the soundtrack set to the images on screen. I made it a point to purchase the soundtrack and relive the movie in my head while I listen to the music. GREAT! Soundbites! Right on! Now I can listen to the music and actually have some lines to quote to some friends while telling them about this movie. DualDisc? Ummmm.....ok, never heard of it, but the concept is pretty cool, music on one side, DVD on the other. Lets go! Purchased and ready to play in my cd player in my car. Good it plays. I thought with the wideness of the cd it wouldnt fit into a conventional CD player and I would have to buy a DualDisc player to go with my brand new purchase. Great music, great tunes, great soundbites. Time to put it in my Dell DJ at home. Cool, starting to burn on Realplayer. See my computer or car stereo had no problem with playing the disc. Sweet. Wait, what is this. Error reading the cd halfway through? Wait that cant be right, no dirtiness or scratches on this bad boy because I just bought it 4 hours ago. Lo and behold, it looks like my disc was tied to the back of a truck with a rope and dragged a few hundred miles. I guess the girth of the cd was so gynormous that the cd was actually scratching the lens on the inside of both my car stereo and computer. My soundtrack is virtually unplayable from track 12 on onward without it stopping because of a scratch in the disc. Great. Right about now is a good time for a few f-bombs and things of that nature, but amazon will delete your review. Right now I have the rating set to 2 just because the music is so sweet, but i changed my mind. Zero stars. DualDisc stinks.
Free Music Review: Great Movie, Great Soundtrack. Too bad I can't play it or burn it to my computer! Hit: 1 Stars
DualDisk should be ashamed of themselves for creating a product that can't be copied onto an ipod. So now I have to buy another copy of it at iTunes online store just so I can hear it on my ipod? Ridiculous. And even if "Illegeal copying" wasn't an issue, I still should be able to play the thing on my computer, which for many of us is our only soundsystem. The "CD side" won't even play! How insane is that? I'm returning my copy, getting my money back and downloading the songs off the internet for free. That'll teach me to dish out my hard earned cash and support a movie and product that I enjoy. Thanks for nuthin',dualdisk!
Free Music Review: Very Disappointed Hit: 1 Stars
I bought this one, after what seemed like a very long wait, without a second glance. This was because the soundtrack for 1000 Corpses is one of my faves. However, I was very disapponted when I recieved it and realised that none of the material is Rob's (I know, my own stupid fault there). It's just an odd mix of dated rock and country. It was one thing to throw in an odd tune here and there on the first one(although I considered this to be a weak point), but here there is nothing to look forward to but tired AM radio fodder.
So sad.... :(
