This is a fantastic indie rock album that will grip you from the first listen. Even though it's virtually all acoustic guitar, vocals, and drums, it is very melodic and rocks quite hard. Almost every song on this album is high quality. Red and Purple, Fools, Park Song, and Jodi are standouts, but there are no throwaways.
This album is well worth the money for anyone that likes melody and rhythym. A must buy.

There's a lot of fairly derivative music out there, and it can seem that even the music that aims to be different has difficulty finding a unique sound. So when you hear a great review of a new album, it can be difficult to take it seriously.
But The Dodos have a clear and original sound that doesn't worry about artificially mystifying itself, nor keeping itself accessible. They just play music, and their has a sense of urgency that comes through the music, the lyrics, and the delivery. In many ways, it's an extremely well-rounded album; by which I mean that it doesn't rely on tricks (there's no "ballad" song, or at least not one that's more ballad-y than the others) but keeps itself fresh after repeated listens.
I would recommend tracks, but that's an unnecessarily reductive way to think about this music. Buy the album and you'll be glad to have it.

How do they make so much noise without an electric guitar. I marvel. The Dodos have made a complete album from start to finish. Finest album of 2008 thus far. My sense is that it will not be topped. It is that good.
