Free Music Notes for Live In Boston

Free Music Review: Wrecked Morrison, but still compelling
Hit: 4 Stars

Not one, but two more complete, uncut Doors shows recorded for Absolutely Live, both of these from Boston, 1970.

As has been noted by everyone, Morrison is clearly drunk for the performances. This is a grittier show, with all the good and bad the band was apparently capable of. The music is excellent as the band carries the singer through most of this. It's unpredictable, it's not always pretty, but it's definitely a welcome release from a band that keeps re-releasing their studio albums. And despite the famously inebriated singer, there are many excellent moments here as years of live performance experience propel the band forward.

Unlike the older Doors live releases (Absolutely Live, In Concert), this one has no overdubs, and is from single sources, uncut and unfudged. Once again, Doors engineer Bruce Botnick is responsible for the mixing here. Some funny moments, too, such as when the Boston house management shuts down the power, effectively ending the show, with Morrison warbling "Hey! Hey!", and the crowd booing.

Very nice package, three discs, liner notes, nice photos, and original poster art. The recently released Pittsburgh 1970 disc is a better overall show, with a sharp Morrison. This is definitely recommended for diehards and completists. More casual fans may want to pick up one of the other excellent Bright Midnight releases (Detroit, either Aquarius package, Philly, or Pittsburgh).

Free Music Review: Good for its intended purpose
Hit: 4 Stars

As with all of the Bright Midnight releases, this release is intended more as a historical document than a perfect musical experience. If you're looking for the perfect "cut and paste" show, you should go check out the "In Concert" set. If you're looking for the best quality full show that's available at the moment (I say at the moment because there are rumblings of the Felt Forum shows being released in their entirety sometime next year), go get "Live in Detroit" (an amazing show, I only wish that I could have been there).

If you are a serious fan of The Doors, you'll like this. It definitely shows a sign of Jim Morrison that has not been seen before in the previous releases by the band. Yes, he is drunk and slurs his speech. He still has his strong moments, though. In the liner notes, Bruce Botnick (the album producer) states "The opening scream going into 'Roadhouse Blues' from the first show is stunning and worth the price of admission alone."

Overall, it's still a fun listen, even humorous at times (such as when Jim Morrison puts the microphone in his mouth), especially if you are a true Doors fan. This will be displayed next to my other Bright Midnight releases with pride (even if the packaging is a bit iffy).

Free Music Review: Roadhouse Booze
Hit: 4 Stars

"Live in Boston 1970" is the rough-edged "warts and all" Doors release we've all been waiting for. Jim Morrison feels no pain during these unpredictable Boston Arena concerts - propelled by the brilliant playing of Robby Krieger, Ray Manzarek and John Densmore. The results are occasionally sloppy, yet often compelling musically. Jimbo really lets loose with his stream-of-consciousness rapping and engaging blues covers. When considering his inebriated state, it's amazing that Morrison performed two shows in a single night. Historic document, indeed.

Free Music Review: Next to Absolutly Live...This is as good as it gets
Hit: 4 Stars

I still dont get why some people on here want to try to rip this 3cd album. To me its number 3 in my list of DOORS live stuff. I have the box set with a NEW YORK live gig and then ABSOLUTLY LIVE is the best they have released so far. For the amount of money it cost and all the music you get, including Morrisons version of CROSSROADS which is really good, this album has stood the tes of time and I bet you it will be part of yours, like mine,DOORS collection and be played alot.

Free Music Review: The Doors Do Their Thing
Hit: 4 Stars

Many of these reviews have been negative. I have to say that I was quite entertained by this 3 disc set. This is not the finest, most polished music the band has released but it is fun to listen to. The band does an adequate or better job, Jim says silly things and screams, and the sound quality is great for the age.

I would recommend this album before the Live in Philadelphia but after Detroit.
