Free Music Review: It's not 'The Guitar And Other Machines', but......

Probably the easiest thing to do would be to copy word for word the liner notes from this reissue, as they accurately describe the times....as all of the Factory Once series do. In my opinion Durutti Column can do no wrong (well possibly 1982's 12 minute plus "Piece For An Out Of Tune Grand Piano" comes close)..
...But not here, this 1990 release cleverly uses the technology of the moment, but does not dip so heavily into the trappings of other (great) electronic bands of the time like fellow Mancs 808 State. Vinni's guitar is minimized even further here. On some tracks even sampled and played at different rates....
It never sounds forced, though and has a surprisingly angst free feeling laid back vibe, that may be due to the electronic percussion backing most tracks. "Neon" is possibly my favorite on this album.
I did not own this entire album at the time of release, but did manage to purchase the "Fridays" ep which is, in it's entirety, represented hear. The only thing that is a head scratcher about this re release is why they added the drum and bassey "Kiss Of Def" which was obviously a late 90's addition, as in 1990 Drum and Bass was most certainly at it's infancy. Oh well, a little lack of continuity is what I always found charming about The Durutti Column. You will find yourself effortlessly listening to the album over and over again....and If you do indeed enjoy this Durutti Column CD, you will love my favorite D.C. album 'The Guitar And Other Machines'...
