Free Music Notes for The Early Sound City SessionsFree Music Review: '70s Rick Hit: 4 StarsFabulous CD. A good example of Rick Springfield's early work, as he intended it. Lots of great harmonies and screamin' guitars. A nice introduction into Rick's '70s work, which is lesser known than his '80s hits. You can see the progression of a wonderful songwriter. I recommend this CD for both novices and die hard fans alike.
Free Music Review: Don't judge by it's cover Hit: 3 StarsClearly, there was some legal precedent for not using a real photo of Rick on this cd. The music inside is decent enough... Must have for Rick fanatics. The rest of the world doesn't really care, I'm fairly certain.
Free Music Review: Finally! Hit: 4 StarsI haven't actually heard this whole album yet, but, I had to write a review because of the song "Bruce" I have been looking for this song for several years because I heard it in the early 1980's on a radio station in Philadelphia that played it. I actually taped the song from the radio station, and I still have it on tape to this very day. The version that was played on the station is not the same version that is on the album, though, it's a bit more rock oriented than this version. I am a big fan of Mr Springfield, having seem him in concert 2 times.
Free Music Review: Rare and good stuff from Springfield Hit: 4 StarsHere is your chance to finally own the CD that helped start a great career. The song BRUCE alone is worth owning this CD but there is so much more great material to be heard. The instrumentation may be a little different from the Beatiful Feelings album but you still get the great sound and songs.
Free Music Review: Anyone could tell by listening to this collection that Rick was heading on to greater pastures Hit: 4 StarsThe Good
This collection of early Rick Springfield material was originally recorded between 1977-1978. These particular versions have never been released, but most were re-recorded for one of Springfield's major label releases Beautiful Feelings. However, this collection still features one song that has never been released or re-recorded; "Still Got the Magic." This particular track would fit in well with Rick's early material, even though it has a post-disco feel to it. As for the other tracks, "Bruce" is a clever and humorous track about mistaken identity. In the first verse his lady confuses him with another man. In the second verse it's a record executive confusing him with Springsteen.
"Just One Look" is recognizable from the various cover versions and commercials it's appeared in. Rick's vocals are heartfelt, breathy, and seductive. This may just explain his ravenous female fan base. "Everybody's Cheating" is a piano ballad that is fairly standard for the seventies, with added guitar to give it that rock edge. It sounds like a long lost Billy Joel song. "Cold Feet" is a guitar riff based rocker with a boogie-woogie feel to it. It's not about failing to make it to the alter as you may expect, but it's about not making it with the neighbor's wife. "Gwenevere" is a sweet sounding ballad, but the lyrics are a little cheesy.
The Bad
Rick Springfield had no involvement or knowledge that this was going to be released.
The Verdict
I've never heard the album Beautiful Feelings, so this release was all new to me. I like the early seventies rock sound that Rick was working with at the time. Anyone could tell by listening to this collection that Rick was heading on to greater pastures.
