Free Music Review: Outstanding, Incredible, Meditative Work
Hit: 5 Stars

I purchased The Eye of the Eagle just over four years ago and was initially disappointed. Listening to it a few times through, it failed to grab me, and I couldn't believe that the combined efforts of Dave Bainbridge and David Fitzgerald, the two immensely talented founders of the band Iona, had come up with such a seemingly lackluster work -- a result that should have been even less likely with the addition of the prose and readings of Celtic Christian author David Adam. Well, two or three months passed by, and I put it in my car CD player. Almost immediately, I was stunned by the work and played it constantly over and over again. It became my favorite CD of all time, and while I don't listen to it as frequently as I used to, it still gets that award hands down.

Why the incredible variance in my reaction to the CD? I think there are several reasons. First, the CD is somewhat cinematic in quality; while clearly low-key compared to Iona's masterpieces, the music paints pictures of vistas and evokes moods and feelings that may resonate with the listener during a long drive. (It's best to listen to it when out in the country and away from the city.) Second, and more importantly, this is a long, flowing, cohesive work. Each track is wonderful, but it is difficult to think of them individually; each one flows into the next effortlessly. The cohesiveness makes this CD a masterwork.

Third, as alluded to earlier, this is a very meditative work. The music itself is enough to inspire much contemplation, but when you add David Adam's readings from his 1990 book of the same title, you're up in the stratosphere in terms of meditative content. You may find this album to be a very formative spiritual tool. It is very Christian in terms of content, but should prove accessible to people of many religions. I found it to be a very valuable album to use as background for praying.

If I were to throw all of Iona's remarkable albums into a pile, along with all of the solo albums and special projects from the band members, and choose to rank them, this one would go to the very top of the heap. As an Iona devotee, I don't say that lightly, and I'm aware that many Iona fans would disagree. This is a much more mellow album without the typical progressive rock stylings found in Iona's works. It is different, and in some respects a difficult album to appreciate, at least initially. But it rewards the patient listener, and it's ultimately a masterpiece.
