The Fiery Furnaces have always had a strange place for me, owing much to the fact that i was introduced to them by a beautiful girl who later tore my heart out and used it to store pot in. however, i always appreciated the limited amount i had heard before. (Gallowsbird's Bark, Blubeery Boat and EP)
i bought Bitter Tea completely on faith, expecting the same speed-head songs, awkward rythms and offbeat changes, but was surprised to get instead a very different experience. at first i did not like it, but then i listened again.
the album draws on, not so much as a collection of songs, but one long confusing mass of odd turns and change-ups. though there are definite songs, they all mix together in an always intriguing, sometimes offputting amalgamy. when listened to in this context the album becomes a very different animal.
it becomes a long opera, a short era of musical story, it seems more a twisted and linear tale than any of the previous albums i had heard before. it is incredibly strange, it is weird and unnerving, even abrasive at times, but overall it is a unique and worthwhile experience. one that leaves you questioning the why, more than the how.
the music is sad, often with an almost overbearing melancholy, and what i left with was a simple story of confusion and loss, a bitter tale. it is an interesting journey to take. i suggest you listen with headphones.
