Free Music Review: McCartney's on fire!
Hit: 5 Stars

McCartney has always sounded better live than on studio recordings. I've been fortunate to see McCartney once (yes, only once) live. And as expected he was a master craftsman at every instrument he touched, be it voice, piano, guitar, bass. Amazing. Beyond being a "Jack of all instruments", he seems to have a gift for off handed improvisational bits. I mean, like a yell here, and a little guitar thing there. The little things that make it all come together. It's just right. The Fireman project, with each song given one day to record, then neatly tucked away, allows McCartney to improvise and yet come up with a studio recording. And one well worth listening to.

Paired with a bloke called Youth (aka Martin Glover formerly of Killing Joke and a well accomplished Producer), he has managed to go beyond the often wet and perfumy sugared down pop and managed to give us a decent embodiment of modern new age, blues, experimental rock. It's a pleasure to hear, never searing the ears with gooey "love gone bad" lyrics. John would have been proud, for it sounds more like a john-esque project then one you would expect to hear from McCartney. Not to say that I was not an immense fan of Paul's melodic, hard driving pop songs. For I was. Just that he hasn't seemed to be able to pull those out in several years (decades?). Just as early critics of the Beatles marked Paul as a great R & B singer, this recording shows that "the Blues" is his forte. Often experimental, with eery droning some, but also with good driving beats, some Blues, and everything is solid. In at least one song, Paul is playing Bass, 2 different guitars, keyboards, congas (?), drums, pan pipes, and of course vocals. And the vocals... let's talk vocals...Almost every song uses a different technique with the vocals along with different tone ranges. On his solo albums for the past several years, Paul seems to be searching for a sound, not really knowing what or how or who to help him find it. It's a wonder he hasn't used Youth for his "Paul McCartney" solo albums. Sometimes it's just the right person and just the right combination. And this is it. No, this is not a happy super pop album, it is eery night music, sometimes dark. But it is music at it's best. The way McCartney needs to be, more relaxed and natural. Superb.

Listening to these songs I hear influences from other bands; U2, Peter Gabriel, CCR, Beck, Ozark Mtn. Daredevils, the Mars Volta, , Enigma, Jon Anderson. And yet, all of these artists were influenced by the Beatles. So, in essensce he is only influencing himself!

The album starts off with the Bluesy "Nothing Too Much Just Out of Sight", sounding very much like the Stones, or the Beatles "Why Don't We Do It In the Road" from the "White Album".

On "Two Magpies" they keep it simple in a "Blackbird" sort of way.

"Sing the Changes" is immediately my favorite and could easily be a top 40 song (if the verses were cut a bit). Compelling sermon like delivery with a nice guitar riff bringing everything together.

In "Traveling Light" McCartney puts on his Peter Gabriel impression, playing flute and singing with a low Peteresque vocal.

"Highway" is a pretty straight forward pop rock song with a driving beat. This is my least favorite of all the songs on this cd.

"Light From Your Lighthouse" reminds one of a hillbilly drinking song. This one sounds like a mixture of the Ozark Mtn. Daredevils, CCR, and Beck.

"Sun Is Shining" just has that orb like feeling you get with some U2 songs. Very U2-ish.

"Dance 'Til We're High" is another one of my favorites. For some reason, this one reminds me of early / mid 80's college/Indi radio. It also has tinges of Genesis...

"Lifelong Passion" is another one that gives off that U2/Peter Gabriel/Genesis aura. One of my top four.

"Is This Love" with pan pipes (?), another one of my top four, could easily be the background music for the Titanic. On a later note: Reminds me of whales, water, and could easily be a tribute to these majestic creatures.

"Lover in a Dream" - When I first heard the Mars Volta, I thought they drew their sound from the Beatles... well, I think he drew this sound from Mars Volta. :)

"Universal Here, Everlasting Now" is a great example of a more modern - yet seemingly natural - approach to the music. Here we have an independent guitar... and a totally independent drum beat... put together to make this amazingly compatible musical piece.

And, finally, the coda "Don't Stop Running". I have been a Beatles fan for over 40 years. I have listened to McCartney for....ages... and yet, I have never heard him sing like this. He sounds like Jon Anderson (of Yes). And... it works! And with an interesting harpsichord like sound... just everything on this album is a hodge podge of sounds and instruments... and it is never boring. Well, except for the 3 minute interval towards the end of this song. Much like "The End" as it goes into "Her Majesty" on the "Abbey Road" album.

All in all, I love this album. This is the best thing McCartney has done since the mid 70's. But don't expect it to sound like the mid 70's. It sounds like 2008. It's great!

To quote McCartney "The Fireman takes your hand and leads you through the blaze to places you didn't know you wanted to go."

Electric Arguments Poster

Paul McCartney's 2008 album with producer Youth. Each track written, recorded and sung in the space of one day with Paul McCartney, playing all instruments. 'The album's opener is classic rock and an instant attention grabber. A heavy guitar riff with loud drums and souring vocals, it's like nothing The Fireman have ever done before.' The Fireman are back after a ten-year break. Electric Arguments is their third and brand new studio album and it's not the album people might expect from the mysterious duo.'
