Free Music Notes for The Fountain

Free Music Review: sublime collaboration
Hit: 5 Stars

A fan of Aronofsky's extraordinary Requiem of a Dream, I was anxious to discover if The Fountain's music style would be as equally compelling or as memorable. After all, Requiem is one of the most memorably haunting film scores in recent memory and quite a tough act to follow. The score does not disappoint; Clint Mansell and Kronos Quartet leave a lasting impression. The Fountain is reminiscent of Requiem's score, but is not overshadowed by its predecessor.

This is a stunning and often dramatic score, encompassing delicately ambient tones, heartbreaking cords and sorrowful piano. Scottish post-rock act Mogwai's addition to Kronos Quartet is like icing on the cake, bringing a dark edginess very appropriate to the film's themes of mortality and love.

The Fountain may or may not be added to Aronofsky's list of achievements, but the score is undoubtedly breathtaking. You will be sure to enjoy this as a fan of Requiem or Mogwai, but even if you are not, check this out, it will dazzle you.

Free Music Review: Better than Requiem for a Dream!
Hit: 5 Stars

When I say "better than requiem" i don't mean to imply that I'm implying the films. I've not seen the fountain, but I heard it was not a great film. This is a stunning score. The music is haunting and atmospheric and unlike the requiem for a dream score, it's very dynamic and it unfolds so well. The Requiem score is really only tolerable in with it's motion picture companion as it's repetitive and stagnant. Mansell's score for the Fountain has a lot of variation and can easily stand alone as music. Which is alright because supposedly, the film isn't worth watching. Kronos is just as breathtaking on this recording as they are in the Requem score, and the addition of Mogwai makes it perfectly breathtaking. It's great to be able to have a film score CD that I can listen to all the way through and not feel like I've been assaulted with the same motive or theme over and over again. This is great film scoring and I can't wait to hear more from Clint Mansell.

Free Music Review: Extraordinary music from a visionary film
Hit: 5 Stars

I knew the first time I saw The Fountain (and since then there have been many viewings) that I'd have to track down this score. It's haunting, mesmerizing, beautiful, melancholy, magickal and dreamlike...very much like the film. I love to play this on the weekends when I drive up to visit friends in the mountains, it's great road music. I can honestly say that I've never heard anything quite like it and I only wish there were more tracks or that they were longer. But it does contain every bit of melody and music from the film, from all three stories, so if you fell in love with the unique sound you won't be disappointed. I thought the cardboard case was a bit on the cheapskate side, but I suspect that this was all done on a modest budget, since it wasn't exactly a big money project or even a sleeper hit. Too bad, because from the script to the cast to the direction and music, this is all incredible, awe inspiring work.

Free Music Review: Flawless...beautiful...haunting...
Hit: 5 Stars

I enjoyed watching "The Fountain", but in my humble opinion the soundtrack far surpasses it.

What Clint Mansell/Kronos Quartet/Mogwai have produced is a work that captures the movie's somber theme in greater detail than the actors could portray.

The soundtrack opens with "The Last Man", which hooks you with a simple, mysterious piano melody and really takes off when the Kronos Quartet hits the same melody with multiple layers on the strings.

"Stay With Me" is another enchanting, bittersweet track where you can really feel the influence of Mogwai's post-rock guitar-work adding a new dimension on top of the string-work of the Kronos Quartet.

The final track, "Together We Will Live Forever", ties together some of the melodies from "The Last Man" and "Stay With Me" to end the soundtrack as beautifully as it began. Another favorite track is "Xibalba".

Free Music Review: A Story of Melodies
Hit: 5 Stars

Every song in this soundtrack was played, at one point or another, in the film. They all revolve around certain melodies or tunes but somehow manage to distinguish themselves from one another beautifully.

I love the film and possibly adore the soundtrack even more. Once you listen to the songs, all you can think about is the movie and the incredible story and imagery. The songs have the ability to transport you into another feeling, mood, train of thought. I consider this one of the most amazing soundtracks I've ever heard, on par with Lord of the Rings and Titanic soundtracks.

Like most people my age, I hardly ever buy music but I felt that I needed to buy this CD and I do not regret it at all.

My suggestion, even if you didn't like the movie (shame on you), is that you should buy the soundtrack nonetheless. Wonderful buy, trust me.
