Free Music Review: Scottish band makes impressive debut in U.S

Following the release of their previous EP, Flathead EP, in January, The Fratellis (Jon Fratelli-lead vocals/guitar, Barry Fratelli-bass guitar and Mince Fratelli-drums) blast into the United States with their infectious debut album, Costello Music. Already gaining steam from the song "Flathead," which is currently being used in the iPod commercials, the Fratellis bring a raw garage sound with just a little bit of punk to add some flavor. Of course the Fratellis should not be written off as another pop/punk clone like crap bands such as Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance or Good Charlotte. Already a huge sensation in their native Scotland, the Fratellis come stateside armed with ear catching pop hooks and play back value in every song. I almost feel like I hurt the band's integrity by calling them "punk." In fact, their not. That is why the Fratellis are already an elite band compared to their so-called indie, garage or punk peers. They refuse to follow the mainstream music style other bands like to catch on to. Costello Music is a genius blend of garage glam-power pop that gets the listeners foot tapping right off the bad. The previously mentioned "Flathead" and the 50s type rocker "Creepin Up The Backstairs" are easily the stand out tracks of the album. "Henrietta" makes you want to get up and dance and the Kinks inspired "Whistle For The Choir" might possibly make you whistle along in good fun. The Clash like "Chelsea Dagger" also rocks in the style of a "do do do do..." Both "Whistle For The Choir" and "Chelsea Dagger" were both top ten hits in the UK. Costello Music might be one of the best albums so for this years. Excellent album for a power charged band that knows how to play but also has a great time doing it.
