Free Music Review: Real High Energy Bluegrass

There's a certain raw, unpolished energy to this group's bluegrass that embodies the essense of real bluegrass music. Unpolished doesn't mean unsophisticated or low quality, however, as it complex ensemble music at its best. Hailing from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, well, it don't get no more authentic! So many bluegrass groups simply play one solo after another, which can be entertaining, but sometimes unsatisfying. While the Hackensaw Boys do the occasional breakout 8-measure solo, it's more about the group, less about the individual. Their own compositions are refreshing yet retain a traditional feel. When the Hackensaw Boys play, you don't feel like you're in a concert hall -- you feel like you're on their front porch. It's evening and the crickets are chiping. Your feet are tapping to their rhythms and your heart skips a little with every harmony. I couldn't think of a higher complement for true bluegrass.

The Hackensaw Boys first began playing their joyful blend of old-time tinged music on the streets of Charlottesville in the autumn of 1999. Far from limiting themselves to the old-time canon, however, the Hackensaws have been first and foremost a band of songwriters. Their music, while drawing upon the spirit of the mountains, is sophisticated and informed by the best elements of punk rock and classic country music.
