Four of a kind, here as in poker, sure beats a straight flush.
This album's material and production would have been pretty good if it had been recorded by any one (maybe even two) of these artists. It matches the pioneer character and fortitude of each perfectly.
But, just as each participant presents a subtly different shade in the reds, whites and blues of their own take on the gritty prototypical Amurrican hero, their nuances prevent the collection of charcter songs from becoming monotonous. There are some outstanding tracks, some very fine ones and a couple that are saved from being only also-rans by the spicing and variety of four decidedly distinctive-yet-meshed stars.
