Free Music Notes for The Hyperion Schubert Edition 30 - Winterreise / Goerne, JohnsonFree Music Review: Marvelous Winterreise Hit: 5 Stars
Matthias Goerne signs one of the most moving performances of this most moving song cycle. I grew up with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, but Goerne's voice and attention to the nuances of the text is as wonderful in their ways as is the "master's." Goerne is clearly one of the two or three best of the new generation. This is another feather in the cap of the Schubert series.
The Hyperion Schubert Edition 30 - Winterreise / Goerne, Johnson PosterVolume 30 in Hyperion's complete Schubert song edition consists of Der Winterreise, one of the greatest and most profoundly depressing pieces of music ever written. Matthias Görne is a magnificent soloist, extracting the maximum variety of nuance from these bleak poems, but never overacting to the point where he just becomes annoying. (It's a real problem in this work. Sometimes you just want to scream at the singer "Shut up and die, already!") Adding to the attractions of this performance are Graham Johnson's magnificent notes, as thorough and clear a discussion of the music as you are ever likely to read. --David Hurwitz
