Free Music Review: Fun? Yes. Great? Hardly.

Since I occasionally enjoy the offbeat, I picked this up with its successor when I saw it an an indie San Diego record shop after reading positive reviews of it in an English music magazine. But now that I've heard the CD, I can't agree with either the magazine's breathless review or with the rhapsodic hosannahs of the other reviewers here.
Is this a fun CD? Oh, yeah. Is it great? Not on your life, but I guess one's definition of greatness in music depends on the quality of what else they listen to.
If you are expecting the type of music ordinarily dubbed as Krautrock, such as that by Can and Kraftwerk, you'll not find that here. What you'll find is mostly an amalgam of American-influenced jazz, funk and soul with a little Brit "beat" thrown in. Think Georgie Fame, Ramsey Lewis, and Booker T., though mostly nearly not as good. Anything truly German seems to be tossed in as an afterthought to justify the title.
Here's what's interesting:
Hildegard Knef's From Here On it Got Rough, Heidi Bruhl's Berlin which sounds like something that could have been written for Nancy Sinatra by Lee Hazlewood, and the Vivi Bach/Dietmar Schonherr song Molotow Cocktail Party which is best enjoyed if you understand German.
Now here are some decent instrumental soul/funk cuts:
The best of all is Gunter Noris's Gemini which is almost worthy of Ramsey Lewis. Other good ones are the Memphis Black cut, Sunday Love Affair, Stundenhotel Von St Pauli; Jungle Soul, and Moving Out.
The best "beat" cut is Bill Ramsey's An Unknown Quantity.
Finally, the overall best cut is the final one. Eugen Thomass' Undergroovin' is a jazzy proto-prog number that is somewhat spoiled by an annoying Jew's Harp but that nevertheless leaves the listener in a relaxed mood.
What brings this CD down a notch or two is the inclusion of a half-dozen execrable tunes that are either repetitive, jejune, or just plain silly. The worst of these are the Boots' Alexander and Orchester Werner Muller's Bodybuilding. Do those who compiled this disc really think those swabby songs are worthy of anything but the scrapheap?
This would be a great and interesting CD to play at a mid-60's themed dance party. As you will hear, most of it won't leave you cringing. You may even be forgiven for not finding a way to skip the junk! Despite my few negative comments, there are at least some songs which make this worth listening to occasionally. In-Kraut Vol II is somewhat different. Watch for my review of that.

Marina Records proudly presents The In-Kraut -- twenty handpicked soul, beat, now sound, mod and soundtrack gems from Germany -- all recorded between 1966 and 1974. Among them many Kraut-pleasin' obscurities and long-forgotten nuggets that appear now for the very first time on CD. While the musical climate in Germany of the late '60s and early '70s was clearly dominated by horrible Schlagers, nevertheless, records of outstanding class were cut with Teutonic precision. Just check out "Gemini" by G?nter Noris, a stomping piano-led instrumental worthy of Ramsey Lewis. Or the proto-funk of Erwin Halletz "Das Stundenhotel Von St. Pauli" -- a tight soundtrack groover clearly inspired by James Brown. Or the elegantly sweeping "Naturally Stoned" by Helmut Zacharias with more than a trace of a brilliant John Barry arrangement, and the Blood Sweat & Tears-inspired "Molotow Cocktail Party" by Vivi Bach & Dietmar Sch?nherr. The guys behind these productions were usually slick jazz players and studio musicians from the tightest orchestras of the country. Somehow these middle-aged men knew how to move the Kraut and adapt their skills to the swinging sixties. The In-Kraut was compiled and annotated by Stefan Kassel and Frank Jastfelder who also compiled two acclaimed Lalo Schifrin anthologies, several volumes of Universal's Get Easy! series, the Mad Mad World Of Soundtracks compilations, and retrospectives of the work of Gary McFarland, Horst Jankowski, Lee Hazlewood and other cool cats. 2005.Pop Music CDs
