Free Music Review: Iconic '70s Sound updated for 21st Century

Fifteen minutes into watching this film at the theater, I was unexpectedly hooked on Marvin Hamlisch's sound -- a fabulous, balanced mix of unabashedly '70s instruments, melodies, beats and flourishes, with a touch of irony and modern grace for present-day audiences. Yeah, I liked it a lot.
The album is almost exclusively instrumentals, making it terrific background/mood music for a party or informal gathering with friends, where talking is emphasized. Most of the music is up-tempo and in major chords, always a plus when socializing.
"Car Meeting" perhaps best captures the spirit of this album - it's no elevator music, reminding me both of Starsky & Hutch car chases and my own Dad's Impala. There is some beautiful piano work in "The Informant" and bluegrass undertones in "Polygraph." Each song contributes to a coherent, overall mood, but also stands enough on its own, providing some new element of sound and tone.
I didn't expect to like the music from this film so much -- my library includes a lot of artists who probably couldn't spell Hamlisch -- but it works. Amazon makes it easy to sample the songs to see if any of the tracks are a worthwhile addition for you. Enjoy!
