Free Music Review: A Wonderfull Score

It seems like many composers turns very well when a movie is about Dinosaurs. To begin this review,I`ll have say that this one rivalizes Willow as Horner`s best score to date. In fact,it seems like Horner was more enjoyable at his early days than he is now!
Anyhow,The Land Before Time is a really wonderfull score,and not just any jerky children`s movie music. He uses fine strings and a light chorus to really express these prehistoric times. The music is sometimes playfull("The Great Migration","Whispering Winds","Foraging for Food"),sometimes adventurous ("Sharptooth & The Earthquake","Discovery of the Great Valley"),and sometimes just mysterious and beautifull (the beginning of track 1,track 7 and 6). This is not what modern composers would imagine as a typical dinosaur movie score. It is much more quiet,relaxing and mysterious,and it doesn`t feature those native drums that are so typical in present dinosaur scores. Instead,there is a lot of feelsome music here.
He also seems to introduce different themes for some of these prehistoric animals. There is one choral,beautifull main theme which I think is the most memorable one,and the probably most recognizable as well. It is a rather serious theme,which both feels uplifting and heroic,as well as mysterious and feelsome.There is also a playfull theme which is heard in track 1,and it sounds very cute,and perfect for dinosaur babies.
Then we have a theme which is always heard when the action is going to take place,first heard in track 2. We also have a dark fanfare which is rather scary (could this be Sharptooth`s theme?),and a rather good,simple motif for the fearsome T-rex that represents one of the villains.
There are only 7 tracks here,but they`re very long (track 6 runs on for almost 13 minutes).
But different from many of Horner`s other scores,this is never getting too repetetive to be a boring listen. Every track has its own magic and new themes are introduced.
When the action music takes place,you just don`t want it to stop. It is so adventurous and has an immidiate sense of danger.
The song by Diana Ross is,though it`s not my favorite track,a nice addition to Horner`s original score,and it was probably the first time Horner tried to base a pop song on his theme. And it worked excellent!But why did they put this as nr 4,when it should be the last track on the CD?
Anyway,that's nothing to care about.
Every time when I listen to this CD,I remember when I was a kid and could watch this movie time after time,and I thought it was so good that I didn`t got tired. Although I am now almost 17 years old,and doesn`t watch the movie,I still enjoy listening to the music. It fills me with both happiness and inspiration to my own dinosaur stories.
I think that this score has been much forgotten and underrated. After all,it is some of the most enjoyable music Horner has ever done,and should be classified as a true classic in film music. I own over 50 soundtracks,but this is on my top ten list and a must have!You really can`t get wrong with this one.
