Free Music Notes for The Life Aquatic with Steve ZissouFree Music Review: Mark Mothersbaugh and acoustic Bowie in Portuguese Hit: 5 Stars
Like the movie, the soundtrack is about enjoying the details. For example:
* If you watch the DVD extras you'll learn how Mark Mothersbaugh developed the little wordless electronic ditties on his keyboard (it looks so easy).
* The music used in the fictional Steve Zissou films is from an actual oceanographic exploration film. Liking the music and subject matter connection, the moviemakers sought permission to use it here.
* The acoustic recordings of David Bowie songs by Brazilian singer Seu Jorge were made during filming of the movie. You see the actual sound engineer holding mic in movie; alas, this means the recording quality of the Bowie songs is not studio-quality.
* Soundtrack includes several of the original Bowie renditions as well.
* The stand alone songs (Devo, Iggy Pop, Joan Baez, Zombies) represent classics that you might not have heard before.
The overall soundtrack is eclectic, fun, original. It reminds you of the movie or can stand alone as an uplifting collection of tunes. Highly recommended.
Free Music Review: Sensible Music. Hit: 5 Stars
I really enjoyed THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU. As visual-appealing and emotional-moving the film is, one of it's best things about it is the soundtrack. About half the songs on the album are David Bowie songs. Most of those are re-imaginings performed by Brazilian musician, Seu Jorge. Seu Jorge's performances have become the key selling point of this delightful album, but has so much more to offer. As much as I enjoy the Seu Jorge songs, I actually like the instrumental pieces composed by Mark Mothersbaugh better. There's something addicting to the keyboard-filled tunes. In fact, my favorite song on the entire album is the instrumental "Ping Island/Lighting Strike Rescue Op". A close second is the album's closing piece by David Bowie, "Queen Bitch." Add in a tune by Devo, some shark attack music by Sven Libaek, and a famed piece by The Zombies and it adds up to one very quirky and original soundtrack. Overall, this is a delightful soundtrack from an endearing movie that's worth the price to own.
Free Music Review: "Musical Genius" Jeremy is indeed an idiot Hit: 5 Stars
I would just like post my whole-hearted agreement with Pedro Bonfim that "musical genius" Jeremy's posting was so pathetically stupid that it barely warrants discussion at all. Thank you, Pedro, for setting the record straight on this retard.
The "Rushmore guy" is Wes Anderson, and I would just like to inform the public that it is highly unlikely that his inspiration for using the acoustic serenity of Seu Jorge came from the lights and sounds of a male barbie doll like Ricky Martin. I hope Jeremy does not represent the state of Minnesota, as his redneck wisecracks (e.g. "La Bumba") revealed just how uninformed and incredibly shallow his musical knowledge really is.
Hey Jeremy, stick to reviewing soundtracks you know best, like "Lonesome Dove" and "Covered Wagon."
Free Music Review: The best movie soundtrack since Garden State Hit: 5 Stars
I absolutely loved Garden State's soundtrack, and TLA's soundtrack is like GS's quirky big brother. I for one would like to commend Seu Jorge's singing. He has an amazing voice, and add that to the range of acting he already displayed in Ciudad de deos we know that he is a force to be reckoned with. The weird thing, I never really loved Bowie, but Seu Jorge just turns the Bowie songs out in a whole different way. Acoustic covers! He's like the Brazillian Colin Hay, or something. I didn't miss the Sigur Ros song, and the song that Murray Dances to in his wetsuit is called "Ping Island Lightning Strike Rescue" on the album. It's not by Devo, its by Mark Mothersbaugh, and it's fully rocking. Surprisingly this album has good bass, and really a good breadth of subject matter. %100 worth your cash.
Free Music Review: WONDEFUL movie accompanied by a masterful soundtrack! Hit: 5 Stars
I am one of those that believe Wes Anderson is quite possibly one of the greatest Director's of our time. Though not all his films go appreciated, the vast majority see what it is he does and it comes in the form of magical worlds inhabited by loveable characters with quirks we can relate to, topped with scores that mesh with the movie seamlessly.
The Life Aquatic is no different featuring classic Bowie, classic Bowie by Seu Jorge (a member of Team Zissou), The Zombies, Iggy & The Stooges, Devo, and more of Mark Mothersbaugh's tantalizing and playful pieces which make up the score in the movie.
Bottom line, this is a beautiful soundtrack featuring some great songs. I enjoyed the movie so much, and now I can relive much of the film through its beautiful music!
