Free Music Review: One of the best soundtracks of recent years
Hit: 4 Stars

There are a handful of movie directors who truly excel at combining music with images: Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Cameron Crowe, Jim Jarmusch, P.T. Anderson and of course Wes Anderson. In particular, Wes Anderson and Cameron Crowe seem to be music buffs who also happen to make movies. Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is one of my favorite soundtracks of the last few years. It's a really odd mixture of songs that wouldn't make sense being together if they weren't in the same movie. If you've seen the movie, you will undoubtedly remember Seu Jorge's Portuguese performances of David Bowie classics such as Changes, Ziggy Stardust, Rebel Rebel and Life on Mars. Not all of them are included on the soundtrack, but several are here. In addition to Seu Jorge, there are wonderful tracks by Joan Baez, The Stooges, and David Bowie himself. The compositions by Mark Mothersbaugh are really good and stand up well to rest of the music. I'm a rock and blues kind of guy, so typically this kind of music wouldn't appeal so much to me. However, something about the music and the movie all just clicks together. Wes Anderson is a really talented director who really knows his music and his choices are always perfect. I love the end credits with Bowie's wonderful Queen Bitch. Certainly this soundtrack will not appeal to most people. Like the movie, it's probably desinted for cult popularity. However, fans of the movie and fans of Wes Anderson should definitely check it out for a quirky, offbeat musical experience.

Free Music Review: Great (as usual), but where's the Starulur (Sigur Ros song)?
Hit: 4 Stars

If you have seen this movie, you will know what the title of this review is referring to. Arguably the most beautiful scene in the movie is where Zissou and co. travel to great ocean depths and finally spot the beautiful jaguar shark that has now caused the deaths of the two people most close to him. Yet what makes this scene a moment of poignancy and magnificence is the Sigur Ros song, Starulur, that plays during the shot. Sigur Ros is a band that demands silence to be appreciate it because its music is that incredible, and as I recall the theater was completely silent at the moment the submarine spotted the shark in the pitch black bottom of the sea. I'm very disappointed that this doesn't appear on here and I would inquire to know why. Howeverthe soundtrack is done by Mothersbaugh once again, and I do not think he's ever failed to please. The Bowie songs performed by Seu Jorge are phenomenal and heighten the emotion felt, and the Iggy & the Stooges song captures the retakover of the ship extremely well. Reminds me a lot of the Rushmore and Royal Tenenbaums soundtracks that I have found most delicious. In my mind, another amazing soundtrack that will be enjoyed by anyone who enjoys Wes Anderson movie soundtracks. The only problem is the afforementioned lack of the enchating, wonderfully mesmerizing Sigur Ros song Starulur, and this may not be something to place blame on if the case were that they were not given permission to put it on the soundtrack.
