Free Music Review: Good ole' Music

Not since the 2nd South Carolina String Band's Southern Soldier have we heard a version of Good Old Rebel this haunting or this authentic. Even though it might give aneurysms to some of my friends, I really had to choose your work on Good Old Rebel. It is a brave tune that turns the bellies of even the most open minded student, teacher, or reenactor. Artists choosing to record it are rare but thank God you all are out there! Good Old Rebel is gold to me. More than any of the speeches or music, or art of the period, Good Old Rebel portrays the most vivid expression of not so much defeat but the war itself. The honesty and cool madness offers us a short ballad of a hell that no other Americans, (besides maybe the Native American) in history could ever know. For us the song might sound like defiance in defeat, loathing away, or an anthem of revenge. But we will probably never know what the tune was to a crippled Confederate standing before the memories of hundreds of thousands of comrades and brothers and family killed, standing before the desolation of his home, his land, his state, his country with nothing but ashes to catch his tears. And as the carpet bagger orders him to cut the buttons and insignia off his coat this song was inspired. It was no Rally Round the Flag.
For men like James and Younger brothers and some like General Forrest Dixie had been crushed. They had a new anthem in their hearts.
I do have to complain about your track, Jesse James. I think that you are very fortunate to only have two degrees of separation from the James Younger gang. Your intention to prove the rebel gang innocent of one bank robbery or another is understandable. Yet, after what they had seen in the war and the even shadier events that followed, especially in a land like Missouri, the gang, I imagine, was as wild as the most wild yankee imagination. (The poor 'border' states had it rough. They got taken over by the cheap carpet baggers, those that could not afford fares further south.) For them it was not about the money. It was about yankee money. Cashing into the yankees' pockets as deep and illegally as the enemy had done to them. They didn't wear masks and except for two occasions they always raided in day light. If they were not out raiding or causing very public spectacles (including writing to the newspapers themselves) they were sleeping. I don't doubt your grandfather. Yet, I believe those proud Missouri roughens would have robbed the banks if they're horses were rested enough. They had experienced violence against their homes all their lives from John Brown's murder spree to executions of their commander, Colonel William Quntreal and several of their comrades at the end. At his high water mark, Jesse James was more than an insurgent. Jesse and his crew may not of been innocent of too many things but they were no less so than their original enemies.
