Free Music Notes for The Lord Of The Rings: Fellowship Of The Ring (The Complete Recordings)

Free Music Review: Colossal, Majestic, Epic. What Else Can Be Expected?
Hit: 5 Stars

When I heard about the release of the complete recordings of Howard Shore's "The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Rings", I was so happy that it's quite impossible for me to describe my feelings as a soundtrack collector -ahem, a soundtrack freak, more like it. I felt the same when the expanded edition of John Williams' "Superman-The Movie" was released back in 2000.
I thought epic orchestral scores were vanishing from the map, but Howard Shore came along and wrote music for the most important film trilogy in years. I mean, listening to the mysticism of the One Ring's theme, the innocence of the Hobbit's theme, the epic Fellowship theme. What can anyone ask?
The idea of the 180 minute piece on three CDs, as well as in one audio DVD, is definitely genius. The packaging is extemely beautiful. Gosh, I'm looking forward to the complete recordings of "The Two Towers" and "The Return Of The King".
The only thing I regret about this album is the absence of 'The Prophecy' from the original release. Granted, the final moments are heard on these complete recordings, but the rest of the track is nowhere to be heard. Pity.
But, in the end, this is still a true masterpiece. Enjoying three hours of some of the best film music ever written is worth the price of this album. And as Gollum would say: 'It's our preciouuuusss.'

Free Music Review: Best movie soundtrack since Star Wars
Hit: 5 Stars

Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings sountracks are easily the best movie soundtracks since Star Wars (I mean the original trilogy). This is a masterpiece. It combines beautiful, heart-rendering songs (particularly any of the Elves' themes) with great action/adventure scores (the Fellowship theme). The soundtrack has such emotional power that, even without seeing the scenes in the movie, you can just feel what's going to happen.

The Fellowship of the Ring of course defines many of the musical themes used throughout the trilogy (particularly the epic Fellowship theme). Oddly enough, while it lacks the epic scale of ROTK and gentleness of TT, I find that this one is the best of the three for most occasions, whether reading or walking to the subway. There's a great variety of music just in this one movie.

A note: this special edition set is expensive but definitely worth your money. This is the COMPLETE soundtrack from the movie. It has many times the number of tracks and runs at over 3 hours (that's twice as long as most movies today!). Each set also includes a high-quality, DVD version of the tracks.

This soundtrack (and the rest of the trilogy) is destined to become a classic. I know Tolkien would be proud. My only question is whether Howard Shore will produce the Hobbit soundtrack...

Free Music Review: A great collection for the LOTR enthusiast
Hit: 5 Stars

I won't comment on the actual score, because I'll assume if you're considering purchasing this you're familiar with the regular soundtrack. This is basically an expanded version of the original music, much like the extended edition of the film was to the original. I would only recommend purchasing this if you've listened to the score several times before and enjoyed it enough to want more.

I am a big fan of the music from this trilogy, and have listened to the soundtracks from the other two films hundreds of times, but could never really get into the music for "Fellowship," which is why I've only listened to this a couple times and haven't enjoyed it as much as I thought. This CD set is beautifully put together. The 45-page book that comes with it is pretty interesting and tells you everything you could want to know about the making of this soundtrack. The inclusion of the Dolby Surround DVD was a nice touch, and I always use it whenever I want to show off my surround sound speakers to someone.

Even though I didn't like the music from this film "as much" as the other two, it is still an incredible soundtrack, and for anyone who really enjoys it you should consider supplementing your CD with the Complete Recordings.

Free Music Review: Absolutely Stunning
Hit: 5 Stars

DVD Audio is absolutely incredible in its detail. A score such as this one deserves the treatment that only high resolution surround sound offers. From the explosive dynamic brass to the softest vocals of Enya and Cocteau Twins, the breadth of this soundtrack is as epic as the film itself. A mere listen in the high resolution stereo format even with a nice pair of Sennheiser headphones and a tube headphone amplifier will make your jaw drop for its stunning clarity; I was unable to rest until I listened to the entire score. In the 5.1 format the soundstage is mindbogling, yet, not "in your face". Subtle detail is so much more appreciated, especially since, in the film, several portions become rather subdued for obvous reasons like dialog and sound effects. But with music only, one is able to close his eyes and listen with imagination of the visuals while absorbing the brilliance of this score. The keepsake box is a nice touch and liner notes are very insightful reading. One can only hope the next two wil be given this royal treatment it deserves. Hats off to Howard Shore for a magnificent score. Only wish the "Final Credits" portion of the extended version of the film was included. That would have made this the perfect soundtrack.

Free Music Review: The best LOTR release out there since the Extended Editions Boxsets
Hit: 5 Stars

As all other Lord of the Ring movies releases the Complete Recordings meet all the high standards set to make us feel guilty for not buying it. The hard paper case resembles an old book with leather-like cover with beautifully carved gold letters and unique artwork.

Open it a wonderful surprise is there for you: behind the cover is located the DVD-Audio with the complete recordings, with superb quality of sound, but the menus e.t.c. didn't exactly enthused me. The rest of the box contains the three CDs with the same material, also excellent, and a wonderful little book (leaflet would be insulting) with analysis of each track, along with parts of the music sheets. All decorated with unique artwork from the movie. The ribbon placed to easily lift the CDs from the box earns an extra star alone, but amazon.com has no 6 stars rating.

The music itself is fantastic. This boxset proves how complex and difficult was Howard Shore's task to score a movie based on such a versatile world as the real one. Highlights: "The Passing of the Elves" and all the Rivendell and Lothlorien related music that was cut from the OST release.

This is the best box containing the best material...
