Free Music Notes for The Lord Of The Rings: Fellowship Of The Ring (The Complete Recordings)

Free Music Review: Great soundtrack.
Hit: 5 Stars

I am an avid soundtrack collector. I personally never liked the music of Howard Shore until The Lord of the Rings movies came out. It's great to have a complete score of any movie. I have bought most reincarnations of the Star Wars soundtracks and are awaiting expanded versions of Episode II and III.

There is only one problem with this set. If one is not too tech savvy, he/she might have a hard time finding the alternate audio tracks. On my older Panasonic DVD player, it defaulted to Advanced Resolution Audio with the choice of Stereo or Surround ONLY. So, at first glance I thought it was false advertising. Then, I popped it in my Sony DVD player and it finally showed the Dolby Digital Stereo and Surround option with the Advanced Resolution nowhere to be found. I was hoping that somewhere in the packaging or on their website that they would address this problem, but I couldn't find anything. So, if you do buy this collection, you should know your DVD player fairly well. Depending on what your DVD player is, the disc itself will default to one or the other. While a track is playing, you are able to switch from Title 1 (Advanced Resolution) to Title 2 (Dolby Digital).

Free Music Review: Unspeakably satisfying
Hit: 5 Stars

Everyone associated with this release outdid themselves. In addition to the complete score, the 40+ page book that comes with it is simply invaluable. Doug Adams painstakingly analyzes every leitmotif (41 at my last count) from Fellowship of the Ring. Notation examples are provided for each leitmotif, and he even exhaustively compares themes and draws parallels and relationships between them that you would never even think of noticing. Very informative and interesting for the musically inclined. My jaw just dropped when I read about how the Fellowship theme and Isengard theme were derived from one another. That's a level of filmscoring that just is not seen!

The packaging is great. My only complaint is the rubber nub that holds the DVD in place. What in the world? I guess it's not that hard to get off but you'll spend a good five minutes trying to fit the thing back in.

Let's hope this release sets an example for other epic film scores (JOHN WILLIAMS AND GEORGE LUCAS I'M LOOKING AT YOU!)

Free Music Review: Excellent collection of missed recordings from the movie
Hit: 5 Stars

If you are a movie music fan like me, you know that very often the recording you get on a CD is not a complete set of music from the movie. The worst offender to this is the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack (it is a great cd, but I keep hoping for an extended version). Anyway, Howard Shore's best work, in my opinion, from the Lord of the Rings Trilogy was in the Fellowship, and this recording includes EVERYTHING from the movie (even some of the slower, quieter, less recognizable themes). My favorite addition is the Prologue complete 10 min. orchestration, and the additional music from the Gates of Durin and Mines of Moria.

Although quite pricey, the collection is superb, and it is historical in the movie making history it belongs to. And just to add, the Additional DVD digital recording would be a superb addition to any audiophile's dream, I don't have a good enough DVD player or audio system to do it justice, but I'm thinking of getting one just to try this out!

Free Music Review: The Ultimate FOTR Music Collection
Hit: 5 Stars

If you're a fan of The Lord of the Rings, you're going to want to pick this up, and go to the product's website (just search yahoo for "Lord of the Rings complete recordings") and download the free liner notes, which are like a 50 page pdf document that has a track by track analysis, photos, a listing of the instruments, lyrics, and a ton of other information. Best yet, the liner notes are free! (In fact, if you're an LOTR fan you're going to want to download this whether you buy this or not.) Also, be sure to pick up The Lord of the Films to complete your collection.

As for the Complete Recordings collection, it includes more than just highlights, more than just the music from the theatrical cut, and more than just the music from the extended editions: it includes all that plus unused concepts that were edited out of the picture. It's the ultimate collection!

Free Music Review: Fantastic set for serious fans
Hit: 5 Stars

The "Complete Recordings" edition of the Fellowship of the Ring soundtrack is a true delight for any serious fan of the Lord of the Rings compositions. The cost of ownership, of course, is substantial, and less-committed listeners would do well to buy the standard-edition sountrack released a few years ago. But for those with the money and the inclination, every piece on this three-CD/one-DVD set is a winner.

Having grown accustomed to the standard-edition sountrack, I was surprised to see how many musical themes that I had thought were introduced in the second or third episode of the trilogy were actually present in the first. Musically, the three films are far more integrated than I had originally realized.

The set includes additional material created for the extended DVD version of the film, and the packaging is very tasteful and well-done. There is little about the set that begs improvement.
