Free Music Notes for The MavericksFree Music Review: Would have given it 6 Stars if I could... Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this CD about three weeks ago and can't stop playing it. Between the smoky soulful ballads, great lyrics, snappy rhythms, and Raul's voice, it's become addictive. Eddie Perez adds even more flavor to the mix and it's great to hear this band back in high form and blowing through all musical barriers. Plus it's a fun sing-along in the car CD - always a bonus! I tried to explain what kind of music they play to a friend who I took to their show here in San Diego recently (a side note, if they play in your town, GO GO GO!! - They're even more fun live and I could easily quit my job and become a Maverickhead. A 'Rickhead? Uh oh...I'll stop there)- are they country? No, no songs about their dog running off with their truck and their wife, rock sounds too hokey, swingy-kinda-country-blusey-Latin-but-not-really-rock was the best I could do. Oh, and Raul's voice and Eddie Perez's playing will bring any self-respecting girl to her knees, especially if you see them live and up close... Great album by a band clearly having a good time and hitting their stride again, definately one of the years best. Enjoy!!!
Free Music Review: Would You Believe, It's the Mavericks' Best Album (so far) Hit: 5 Stars
From the absolutely remarkable opening track, "I Want to Know", to the equally impressive and wonderfully faithful cover of The Hollies "Air That I Breathe" (and not a bad cut in between), this album just might be The Mavericks' best album. When I first heard it almost five years ago now, I remember thinking that it wouldn't surprise me if it sold five million copies.
After countless listens and a recent revisit, I still believe that The Mavericks' self-titled 2003 CD deserves a much greater audience than it has attracted. "Would You Believe" is an instant classic, and the heralded duet with Willie Nelson, "Time Goes By", is every bit as good as one would expect of such a collaboration.
This band gets better with each outstanding album, and this 11-song offering co-produced by frontman Raul Malo can only be topped by what might be coming down the road from The Mavericks. If their track record is any indication, we might expect a new album in the near future - and this fan will be happy if it is at least half as enjoyable as this last go round.
Free Music Review: Once again..... Hit: 5 Stars
The Mavericks are truly a gift to the world of music, and while
I have not heard the whole album, what I have merits the rating.
So my not having heard this in its entirety, I give the Mavericks special credit for being an enigma. In a way I admire them for having come in through the backdoor, so to speak, being a "country" outfit, and while understanding the genre and tipping their hats to the founding fathers, they enjoyed the popularity country provided them, yet doing it in a disguise. Where I give the Mavericks a lot of credit is that they have displayed their rock/pop sensibilities in their live shows when they were riding the crest of their country popularity. That they have truly branched out, playing what they feel like, and hopefully letting some of those who are country fans and Mavericks fans alike, enjoy some diversity. One thing that needs to be said about the Mavericks is they are true music fans, spanning many facets, and we can hopefully look forward to more output from this band. My hats off to the Mavs.
Free Music Review: They just keep getting better Hit: 5 Stars
The mavs are back with another record that defies characterizarion which builds on everything they've done to this point. The opener"I want to know" bring us back to the golden exuberance of british 6o;s pop. From there we go to all the places this band has gone before and more. "Wondering" takes us back to where elvis and roy orbison hold court. Time goes by with a guest appearance by willie Nelson is a showcase for both Willie's and Raul's distinctive vocals. "Because of You" a hot shuffle along the likes of "Dance the night away" has you wondering why youhaven't heard it on the radio. Thecloser,a perfecto cover of the Hollies classic,"Air that I breathe", again showcases Raul's fabulous vocals. This is a great album and its more than a crying shame you probably won't here it on the radio.
Free Music Review: Satisfying Hit: 5 Stars
The Mavericks first album in almost 5 years was worth waiting for. As before, it is difficult to label this newly refreshed group into any commonly held category, and it would be a shame to do so. They are often called "country" but that would discount the many other musical roots they display from one track to the next; R&B, Latin, Pop and Blues all come to mind as I listen to this album. But the overall effect is satisfying, enjoyable and...well, just fun as hell to listen to.
The production values vary from heavy to simple which for this listener, results in a nice surprise now and again. The one thing that is constant is Malo's vox and the talented musicians that make up the core band as well as those they have brought in to make this a very enjoyable collection. Recommended.
