Carved In Sand came out during a time (1990) where there were a lot of English bands that sounded the same or were at the very least difficult to distinguish one from another. Groups such as The Alarm, The Cult, Simple Minds, and the Psychidelic Furs were all producing some rather intriguing tunes and The Mission (aka The Mission U.K.) were one such entity.
One of the unique aspects to The MIssion is they learned from the musicians who walked before them and adapted that foundation into their own vernacular. The George Harrison sitar from "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" homage in "Sea of Love", the Horslips acoustic guitar signature married with the first four bars of Heart's "Crazy On You" and transitioned into The Waterboys on "Amelia", the openeing guitar lick from Jethro Tull's "Fat Man" for their "Moonstone", and the opening lick of "Belief" sure has an unmistakable Stevie Ray Vaughn feel. Not all was lifeted from other groups,in fact subsequnt "borrowing" from The Mission by other groups occured. The most noticable of which was The Thompson Twins ("Hold Me Now")obviously borrowed from "Butterfly On A Wheel".
Is Carved In Sand a great album? Simply said; "no".
Should "Carved In Sand" be a part of ones collection? If one is looking for a representative sampling of the late eighites/early ninties then this would be a fine selection. Each cut is safe and catchy but after a listen through I do not believe you will be humming the lyrics engrained in your head.
