Free Music Notes for Into Great Silence: Office of the NightFree Music Review: Monks at work.... Hit: 5 Stars
Having spent many years surrounded by the intricacies of Gregorian Chant, especially as encompassed in the Divine Office, I was very curious as to just how this recording would sound in beauty, in joy, in prayer. As I found the film "Into Great Silence" to be visually and aesthetically breath-taking, I was a bit apprehensive about the simple sounds of the Office. This recording is, however, marvelous, with enough bells, kneeler banging, wheezing, coughing to set the mind's eye alight with magnificent and simple peace. As a companion to the film, it is excellent. On its own, it is wonderfully complex and delightful. If a listener enjoys applied Gregorian as expostulated in the Divine Office, this recording is a treat, indeed.

The Monks of the Grande Chartreuse offer us a view into their world through their chants and noises (bells and sounds as they move in their surroundings). It takes the listener to another world.....a great CD to meditate with, read with or just have quiet time with the monks. If you have not seen "Into Great Silence" and are interested in the life of the monks its well worth watching. After seeing the documentary I quickly ordered the CD.
Free Music Review: Chant for meditation Hit: 5 Stars
The way the Carthusian monks chant the Gregorian melody in latin is a source for meditation and relaxation.
For those who are familiar with latin and for those who are inclined to meditation 'Into Great Silence: Office of the Night' is a double CD one should purchase; and relish the Gregorian melody in its simplicity, thus elevating one's soul into the realms of the Spiritual.
Free Music Review: Carthusian Chants-A Different Kind of Gregorian chant Hit: 5 Stars
The sung offices and readings of the monks prayer services throughout the day and night are featured. Their chant is much less "flashy" and unadorned than that of Trappists or Benedictine monks. It fits with the austerity and solitude of Carthusian life. The austere chants are haunting.
