Free Music Review: The best review of anything ever written.... period.
Hit: 3 Stars

Classic:
Serving as a model of excellence: outstanding. Of lasting historical or artistic significance or worth.

The pieces sampled on these discs are among the most popular of the thousands of masterpieces of music composed by man since the dawn of the creative spirit. This is what makes them all "classic". It is not the style, emotion, or set of instruments that determines the "classic" piece, but an immortal quality, inspired and created with the utmost care and perfection. In the words of Salieri "Displace one note and there would be diminishment, misplace one phrase and the structure would fall."

Unfortunately, the producers of this compilation album re-releasing snippets of previous recordings did displace not only phrases but entire episodes of music. In the film Amadeus, when the emperor told Mozart to "cut a few notes" from one of his operas, the enraged composer exclaimed "But it is perfect as it is! I cannot cut what is perfect!" It looks like the evil emperor won the battle. Being buried in a pauper's grave was not enough of a disgrace; even today, hundreds of years later, the public mocks his ingenious work by "cutting" whole episodes.

Beethoven was notorious for his incredible temper. If a musician performed even slightly incorrectly, off in rhythm or in pitch, he was known to throw heavy statues across the room, smashing them against the wall. It is hard for me to imagine what the immortal spirit of that great man, with all its incredible other-worldly power must be doing right now it Heaven, since the producers of this album did more than merely perform at an unsatisfactory tempo; they removed entire episodes of his music. Would you watch only 1/3 of a movie without seeing the rest? Would that 1/3 make any sense? Would you read only 1/3 of a novel and claim to have understood it or glanced at a third of a painting and said, "That's all I need to see." If wanting to read the last pages of the book, see the rest of the picture and the remainder of the film makes me and other critics of this album "snobs", then I am happy to be a snob.

Kind regards to the spirit of Beethoven.

Free Music Review: Not exactly that great.
Hit: 2 Stars

While this does have some good works in it, I did not find it as great as some other people thought. First of all, my intention is to inform the people who read this so they can make their own decisions, not to just make a quick comment like most of the ratings did so far.

The recordings were so-so, I've certainly heard better. Also, the pieces selected should not be snipped and clipped. The original pieces were written to be together, so should not be taken apart. Although the CD has the intention to be relaxing, it dilutes the effect with too much relaxing music. After a long time of listening to just relaxing music, it gets kinda old, which goes along with my opinion of how the pieces should be kept together. When the original pieces are together, like they should be, the emotions created by the music is enhanced. For example, in the "Firebird Suite" by Stravinsky, the movement named "The Infernal Dance of King Katschei" is very loud, powerful, and chaotic, and the movement just following that is very soft, eerie, and makes one think of ruins, as if just after a chaotic storm. However, without the chaos that was previously portrayed, it does not produce that image of wreckage. This is the reason why the music should not be taken apart.

Oh, and one more thing, I don't think vocal and orchestral music should be selected on the same CD, because they are two different styles of music, and some people prefer one over the other, and so people that don't enjoy both will only enjoy half of this CD, if they enjoy it at all.

I love sitting in the window and looking out at the trees on a beautiful sunny or dark and rainy day. I love reading books and listening to music, instead of the TV noise. So, how nice it is to have all my most favorite numbers comprised on two disks. This is my kind of "mood" magic.
