Free Music Notes for AlligatorFree Music Review: Stunning Hit: 5 Stars
I got a hold of an advance copy while walking around Greenwich, just about three weeks before it hit the stores, and I have to say it's one of the most solid albums I've ever heard. I liked "Sad Songs..." so much that I think it's one of the albums I've listened to the most in the past years, but in a few months "Alligator" has become a fine contender. It's mesmerizing, the melodies, the lyrics, the beat section... I could go on for hours praising this record...
After all, you get this feeling that this band is *your* best little secret. You'll feel compelled to share this with everybody you know. And then when they come back thanking you for the discovery, you'll quietly grin and think, "I knew it!"
This album has made me feel both the joy and the loneliness of being alive. It is a perfect postcard of these states of mind. It has great confidence boosts (even though some are completely ironic) as well as those intimate, dirty confessions that no one says that often anymore. No pose here, they're just honest, and they rock. And, most importantly, I believe them.
And I'm happy about that.
Free Music Review: Not The Smiths, But Just As Strikingly Original Hit: 5 Stars
Matt Berninger's the modern day Morrissey, circa Smiths. Wild lines of stunning impact and sing-song rhythms, unafraid to even sometimes approach show-tune emphasis in skip-ability, with low-key melody and deep, dark artsy truth. The guy's a mike poet, like Stipe and Bono and all those 80's icons. He stands and sings and turns and stumbles and drinks and smokes while putting out his heart in sad laments. He's already getting hate reviews, just like Moz did back in the day, from people who hate anyone who shakes things up with oddball pop/rock poetry. He really makes the band, though the rest are damn tight rockers and moody evocoteurs (cool made up word?) as well. Do you dig finding a great album that will be remembered for years long before your closest pals, and then shoving it in their faces years later about how you were on to a really big thing long before their lame-o rusty ears were? Cool. Then buy this and memorize it. No kidding. It's real. And Berninger's obviously just getting started. The Chancellor.
Free Music Review: Now you can add another band to your top five list. Hit: 5 Stars
Yes, it's true, this band will change your music tastes. I think I can difinitivy tell everyone I know, and some that I don't, " are you ready to listen to some amazing music?". I know that this music hits me in some ways that not everyone will relate to, but, even the lyrics' subject matter is familiar ground, and always, I begin to reminisce, as if I have been listening to their music for decades; An old stand-bye. Yes, it's true, they are on my top five... You can mellow out, or rock out with your...-; With all the varying degrees of tones, from gently flowing and well- layered tracks. National newbies can start out with Secret Meeting or Daughters of the Soho Riots. Then, you will advance towards amazing emtional pieces like Val Jester or Geese of Beverly Hills. Okay, so you buy it, you love and are like what's next. Here's the good part;
Their earlier album Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers, is at least three to four times better. Now you're glad I told you to buy it.ah-huh
Free Music Review: Songs for the Modern Man Hit: 5 Stars
I found myself really loving this album! It ranges from mellow, to beautiful, to shouting climax with songs like "Mr. November". The lyrics touch base on interesting relationships that have you empathising with his immaturity or loss, than hating his ego for childish antics.
The lyrics are clever, each song is fresh and something new. It doesnt exactly cater to women like music from John Mayer or Michael Buble. But it's not as apathetic or indifferent as something from Pete Yorn. There is a relatable and even desirable quality about this music.
Overall, I'd highly reccomend Alligator for the range it covers as well as the content.
Free Music Review: excellent guitar work Hit: 5 Stars
I've heard a lot of strange comparisons between this band and others (Nick Cave, Joy Division). I don't hear it. Maybe Mark Lanegan and American Music Club. I do hear a great band with with two excellent guitarists and a pretty good singer who hits a few flat notes here and there. The songs are good and memorable, especially "Friend of Mine" and "Karen". The lyrics are very interesting and unpredictable, but the work of the two guitarists who pluck interesting intertwined high notes more than they strum power chords is what really makes this band and this album great.
