Free Music Notes for BoxerFree Music Review: Never Trust Anyone Over 30 Hit: 1 StarsI will never understand others' love for this record; and despite all the great reviews it's gotten I have never personally met someone who actually likes it. So let me insert a dissenting voice of caution: listen to this before you buy it. If you don't like it the first time, it is unlikely you will like it the 10th. Or at least that was my experience. Maybe it's a generational thing, but I just don't hear anything that connects emotionally (or sonically), or that is even interesting on this record; the playing is dull as mud, the lyrics pretentious. It shares with James Taylor the rare ability to be both boring and annoying.
Free Music Review: You know I dreamed about you for 29 years before I saw you... Hit: 4 StarsGiven how many albums The National have released, I am a fairly recent fan, but upon first seeing and hearing them at the Pitchfork Music Festival in 2006, it didn't take long for me to fall under their spell. Boxer is another immaculate masterpiece in their collection.
Some might be put off by Matt Berninger's baritone vocals, but I find they give more to the overall beauty of each song. But what draws me to The National are the lyrics. The songs don't come off as songs, but as conversations that the listener is eavesdropping in on. Casual, nonchalant, and in some ways stoic, Berninger sings from the perspective of the lone wallflower trying to make the best of every situation, but sometimes falls short.
The highlights include: Squalor Victoria, Mistaken For Strangers, Guest Room, Racing Like A Pro, with special props going to Fake Empire (the last minute is sheer beauty), and my personal favorite, Slow Show. The lyric, "You know I dreamed about you for 29 years before I saw you" is the best of 2007.
I won't say that a new fan should start off with Boxer, I would recommend Alligator and maybe even Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers, but this album is one not to be ignored.
Free Music Review: outstanding Hit: 5 StarsI must just have bizarre tastes. While everyone else raves about Fake Empire, it still hasn't grabbed me, yet one of my favorites is Guest Room, which nobody else has even mentioned. Anyway, this album is stellar. I was immediately taken by it, and you could be too, if the thought of an evening with nary a distortion pedal or emo scream sounds appealing. Deserves every bit of attention it is getting, and more.
Mistaken for Strangers is not to be missed, nor Slow Show, nor Brainy, a tricky little gem which will lodge itself in your head for days.
Free Music Review: my favorite record all year. Hit: 5 StarsI doubt I can add much to the thread, except to say that I can't stop listening to this, it is constantly echoing in the back part of my brain, if I lost it I would buy it again without a moment's thought, and they were the best live show I saw all year. Godspeed the National!
Free Music Review: "A Piece of Music Everyone Should Own!" Hit: 5 StarsIts just real Music. From the first track (Fake Empire) to the last Track (Gospel), The album takes you on a journy of emotions. Some good some not so good, yet all essential in making this album one of those must have pieces of music that everyone should own. I first heard The National when I purchased ALLIGATOR. This being the followup I had much concern and reservation that BOXER could top the great lyrics and wonderful music play of ALLIGATOR. Well it went above and beyond, Because you just can't pick one song to be the best. It's just a true album, not what were used to in a day of singles and filler tracks If you took one song away from the album you would lose the intensity of the album as a whole. You must own this it is perfect for the car, the office/shop, or the home.
