Free Music Notes for BoxerFree Music Review: Not bad, but not good either. Hit: 2 StarsI listened to it once. I will never listen to it again. But that doesn't mean it's a bad album. Not at all. In fact I was able to sit through it without falling asleep. The production was fair and the singer reminded me of Matt Johnson from The The, albeit with a lower pitch. So, to sum up, there isn't a song I can recall but none that I hated either. I give it two stars for not making me yawn.
Free Music Review: The new soundtrack for another chapter in my life Hit: 5 Stars The National is one of those bands that grows on you. When I first heard "Fake Empire" I was pretty impressed, however, when I heard the rest of the album I didn't know what to think. After listening to it for a week or so I started noticing myself singing some of the songs at work. "Fake Empire" seems like a song that wouldn't come first on the playlist, however, it ends up fitting in pretty well. Its slow tempo but fast fingered piano part starts off the album. The vocals are very low keyed but passionate. "Fake Empire" catches your attention "Mistaken for Strangers" is your first test. It turns the whole album around and throws a different beat at you with a completely different melody. The chorus seems overwhelming at first but don't worry, soon you will be singing it to yourself at work. "Brainy" is one of my favorite songs on the album. Don't let the drum beat distract you. Listen to the vocals as the centerpiece. "Squalor Victoria" is a song that I never thought I would like. Starting off with an amateur drum beat with a happy feel can instantly be turned around with the simple pluck of a bass string. You'll find that out in this song. "Slow Show" and "Apartment Story" both have catchy choruses. Not pop catchy, rather, Yo La Tengo, Wilco catchy. Okay, the reason why I'm reviewing The National's Boxer is because I don't think it gets enough credit as it deserves. If you want to hear good music from a band that doesn't care about anything but the music they play, listen to Boxer...or go see them in concert theyre on tour. If you give them time and have a good taste in music you won't be disappointed.
Free Music Review: A grower of an album if there was one Hit: 5 StarsListen to it once and get lost in the deep-voiced singing. Listen to it twice and hear how the rhythm tracks and guitar complement the vocals. Listen to it over and over until you realize that very few artists have this ability to make this kind of sleepy albeit propulsive music and know that you have another amazing album in your collection.
Free Music Review: Raise fist to Pitchfork Hit: 4 StarsPitchfork might be accredited for their genuine sensibility regarding the review of music. They have brought to light many great bands I have enjoyed, but now and again I cant help but feel the urge to write in and complain about their mistreatment of some bands. The national was one such band. They are particularly discouraged by long standing careers, and certainly unrewarding to music with melody.
It takes certain intelligence, and eye for detail to make the music pitchfork seems to praise and deliver as "best new music" but the inborn gift of making beautiful melodic music seems to escape their attention. The National's Alligator never got the recognition it deserved. It was quite simply one of the best albums of the year, and with the release of an equally brilliant "boxer", the publication has finally admitted they never gave The National a chance back in 2005.
Maybe I should complain that "Boxer" is the same music they made on "Alligator" but with the critic's lack of respect for the 2005 release, it wouldnt be fair to expect the National to move on and progress. Take two.
This is an album I listen to, for its genuine chills, engrossing lyrics, and more importantly its gut wrenching melody. Its an album to love.
Free Music Review: Best of 2007, their best album too Hit: 5 StarsAlong with Canada's The Besnard Lakes and Stars, The National are by far above the rest of the musical spectrum this year. But not only have they outdone other bands: compared to their previous works, "Boxer" scores easily as their best album too.
While their sound will remind you of numerous other groups (Joy Division, Radiohead, The Cure, Interpol), Matt Berninger's voice gives them a uniqueness that you will long for while the album is out of your reach.
