Free Music Review: Not Quite There
Hit: 4 Stars

The National's second CD shows a band in development. Short of the peak achieved in Alligator and Boxer (with still higher peaks to come, I hope), Songs still gives lots of value. The best cuts -- Murder Me Rachel and the final four songs -- pull all the band's strengths together, voice, lyrics, focused and direct instrumentation in both the raucous (Rachel) and introspective (Lucky You) moods that the band inhabits. Hurt humor also abounds (Trophy Wives). The two big drawbacks here: many of the songs just sort of amble off, with a last minute or so of not so interesting instrumentation. Trophy Wives has this problem. Compare it to the next cut, Fashion Coat, where conciseness at just over two minutes increases its power. The National also hadn't yet fully learned in Sad how to use drums to drive its lyric passion and desperation. By Alligator (think Abel and Lit Up), they had, big time.

One last thought -- Lucky You, with its sneaky and scary irony and obsession, was a first listen sleeper that by the next few times I'd been through the CD sounded like the best thing on it.

Free Music Review: absolutely amazing

Songs 2 through 9 are some of the best stuff The National has done. Slipping Husband lodges in your head and refuses to leave. I kind of wish it had been the first track on the record. Cardinal, Track 1, has 3 am feel that seems misplaced as the first song but who cares this CD has Husband, Murder Me Rachel, 90 mile water wall (best title ever) etc...

Free Music Review: Gets better with every listen
Hit: 4 Stars

I bought Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers after seeing The National open up for the Pernice Brothers. I like the Pernice Brothers but The National blew them away. It's true the album doesn't capture their on-stage presence...but how often do they. Watching a live show should be a different experience. Anyways...give the album a chance...it is GREAT.

Free Music Review: Next time make it more similar of your live show .
Hit: 2 Stars

I saw The National open for The Walkmen in Philly and they had this really nice hard edge to them. However, after their rockin live show I was a little disappointed with the CD. Most of the songs here are slow with poor lyrics (except 90 Mile Water Wall). How many songs do I need about Pretty girls/Pretty Boys and Wives? None, maybe. The only song that compares with the live stuff is Available. If they put out an entire album like that song I would be a huge fan because they are talented. Until then, they are just Ok.
