Free Music Review: The NeverEnding Story Soundtrack
Hit: 4 Stars

I bought this CD solely because I--like many others--admire the film The NeverEnding Story, which has achieved something of a cult status. Anyway, one of the strong elements of that film is its soundtrack.

I must admit I was somewhat disappointed at first (when I began listening), because some of what's on the CD is by no means the same music as can be heard in the film. As other reviewers mentioned, some of the tracks are synthesized hybrids or something. Perfect example is track 3, The Ivory Tower. Listen and ... weep? Well, it's not that bad but not what I had expected, either. It's not that I dislike these synthesized versions, but I would have preferred original material.

But don't worry, later tracks are excellent and whisk you right back into Fantasia.

I would say, revisit the film again, read the book (if you haven't done so already), and whenever you are short on time (or for whatever other reason), listen to this CD. And what you probably also want to know, the CD is almost 37 minutes long.

What I'm going to do now is try to get my hands on Die Unendliche Geschichte (Import Soundtrack), which, as reviewers say, is indispensable, as it contains only Klaus Doldinger's music (I have nothing against Moroder, though) and never-before-heard material. Well, I hope to write a review of that CD sometime soon.

Free Music Review: Memory Lane
Hit: 4 Stars

The soundtrack to THE NEVERENDING STORY really is an enjoyable listening experience. I remember watching the film when I was younger, and I recall how much I enjoyed the fantasy and mystery of the story. Listening to the various songs and musical pieces was a nostalgic experience. For those who have seen the film, I'm sure that you'll also be able to visualize the different scenes in which each song is attached. Some of my favorites were track #6 (Bastian's Happy Flight), #8 (Atreju's Quest), #9 (Theme of Sadness), and #14 (The Auryn). The woodwind/flute in the "Theme of Sadness" has a very full, and haunting sound. And "Bastian's Happy Flight," as well as "Atreju's Quest," have an exciting momentum to them. "The Auryn" includes a nice choral-like arrangement, which brings the listener to the end of the journey. I recommend this soundtrack to those who would like to spend a few moments in the enchanted land of THE NEVERENDING STORY.
