Free Music Notes for The Only One (Mix 13)

Free Music Review: Good single, better b-side
Hit: 4 Stars

'The Only One' is good single with a classic Cure sound. However, its perhaps a bit to generic; a fairly 'safe' first single. I honestly prefer the b-side 'NY Trip'. That second track has more personality, with vocal and piano elements adding a bit of uniqueness. If 'NY Trip' doesn't make it on the album, this single is a must buy.

Free Music Review: a classic sounding Cure song
Hit: 4 Stars

While it's not a 5-star Cure song it is still far better than most other alterna-pop songs out there. As many others have already pointed out it does sound like Wish era Cure and in my opinion that's a great thing, but I'm also the kind of Cure fan that finds it very difficult to be objectively critical of Robert and crew...

Free Music Review: One song is a bit thin . . .
Hit: 3 Stars

. . . to base a review on, but Bob selected this as the first "single" (though I see little commercial potential in terms of radio play in the conventional sense). It does sound like an outtake from "Wish", which is kind of surprising being as supposedly Bob didn't like the poppy stuff from that CD, in spite of "Friday" being one of their finest songs.

I found it disappointing. The meat of this song isn't very strong, though Bob finishes off a couple of phrases that save the overall hook well enough. I thought this was supposed to be a well-produced album, but the playing here sounds a lot like the last CD, kind of loose and jangly, nowhere near the tight structures of his best pop hits. Overall I didn't find it memorable, I happened to play "Lips like Sugar" for the first time in years a couple songs before this, and I've been humming that all day. Shoot, Bob should be able to write rings around something like that. Well, one song . . . but the flip side really hurts the ears.

Free Music Review: head on a door?
Hit: 3 Stars

Only one-
yeah yeah yeah sounds like High off of Wish but i think it kinda reminds of something closer to an outtake off of Head on the door (which i think in the end will have more of an influence on the new album than Wish will). Keep in mind every cure record has that one real pop song to catch all the non die hard fans. This is it. Its poppy, the lyrics do get a bit strange but make sense in song structure way.
Ny trip-
This is the weakest of the b-sides, but alright in the end. I think its a fair song and groovy but has too many holes in it for it to work on the album.
verdict-
Buy it if u are like me and love the cure but for the casual fans just wait till the ablum comes out cuz ny trip isnt for the faint hearted fan.

Free Music Review: Good, but far from great.
Hit: 3 Stars

With a band who's been around as long as the CURE, you know that anything new is going to sound like SOMETHING from their past. This sounds like the "Wish" album, and while that is one of my favorite Cure albums, I can't help but think, especially after their last dismal album from 2004, that if you're going to aspire to something from your past, why not make it "Disintegration"? It doesn't have to sound like that album - but I was hoping that we'd hear something grand, eloquent, epic and monumental this time around. Judging from these two songs (and especially the horrid new single, the tuneless "Freak Show") I don't think that this is going to be that album!
