Free Music Notes for The Only One (Mix 13)Free Music Review: Good, but far from great. Hit: 3 StarsWith a band who's been around as long as the CURE, you know that anything new is going to sound like SOMETHING from their past. This sounds like the "Wish" album, and while that is one of my favorite Cure albums, I can't help but think, especially after their last dismal album from 2004, that if you're going to aspire to something from your past, why not make it "Disintegration"? It doesn't have to sound like that album - but I was hoping that we'd hear something grand, eloquent, epic and monumental this time around. Judging from these two songs (and especially the horrid new single, the tuneless "Freak Show") I don't think that this is going to be that album!
Free Music Review: The Only One Hit: 4 StarsAs the first single from the Cure's forthcoming 13th album, The Only One sets the tone for what Cure fans can expect of this latest album. The single is poppy and jangly, in the style of The Head on the Door and Wish, and though the song itself isn't as strong as some of the singles from those records, it is a nice single, and a good choice as an opener for the set of four singles. The b-side is an interesting, slightly darker affair, but both songs share a sort of sick fascination for erotica in the lyrics, which are rather X-rated depending on how you interpret them. If The Only One is the worst song on their upcoming album, Cure fans will have much to rejoice about. Though the sound may not be as groundbreaking as that of Disintegration or Bloodflowers, it is a sound that will please many fans that were disappointed their the 2004 self-titled album.
Free Music Review: Eh... try again Hit: 2 StarsI LOVE The Cure but I don't think either of these songs are their best work. I agree that The Only One sounds musically like an outtake from Wish but lyrically it reminds me of the silliness that was The 13th from Wild Mood Swings. I was embarrassed by that song and I'm feeling the same way with this one. Perhaps it will grow on me but it's not one of those songs that's going to get a non-fan to stand up and listen.
Free Music Review: these guys are a way too redundant to be releasing singles Hit: 1 Starsespecially when you can download it for free. this band needs to finally go away. wish was a horrible album that did not stand the test of time, so i'm a little confused as to why "harkening" back to wish is a good thing. who is still listening to this band anyways? i find it hard to believe that anyone under the age of 28 would have ever gone through a cure stage in the first place. robert smith stopped making worthwhile albums sometime back in the 80's, mostly because he took it for granted that he still had talent. musically they are totally indistinguishable, and lyrically, well its pretty sad someone pushing 50 is writing jr. high lyrics, only jr. high kids have long since moved on and he hasn't.
Free Music Review: Finally a new Single Hit: 4 StarsGood to hear the Cure back on form.
Saw them perform this live a few times earlier in the year & the almost "fair-ground" feel of the song on the single is a joy really.
The B side is typically quirky & IMO better than the A side.
In fact it wouldn't sound out of place on The Top really.
What does stick in my craw, however, is the fact that the digital download for sale is a poor quality, lossy wma file.
You'd think that a band with the standing of the Cure would at least be able to offer a lossless download.
Even NIN can do that (for free).
Now we need to brace ourselves for June 13th when Fud Show is released.
Here's hoping it's better in the studio than that poppy drivel they are playing currently.
